Chelsea are reportedly preparing a fresh move for Real Madrid defender Álvaro Carreras after Xabi Alonso identified the former Benfica full-back as one of his priority targets.
The Spanish coach remains a huge admirer of Carreras after working with him in Madrid, but convincing Real Madrid to sell could prove difficult, with José Mourinho still keen to keep the defender.
Xabi Alonso wants Chelsea reunion
According to Sport, Alonso has asked Chelsea to sign Carreras as competition for Marc Cucurella.
The pair previously worked together for six months at Real Madrid, where Alonso regularly selected the Spaniard and even used him as a centre-back on occasions.
Although Carreras eventually lost his place during the second half of last season, Alonso has maintained his faith in the 22-year-old and wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have already made an initial approach, reportedly offering €25 million.
Real Madrid immediately rejected the proposal.
Mourinho still believes in Carreras
Despite Carreras slipping down the pecking order following Cucurella's arrival, Mourinho is not ready to let the defender leave.
Real Madrid's defensive situation remains complicated.
Fran García has departed, while Ferland Mendy continues to recover from injury. Although the squad is crowded, Mourinho reportedly wants to give Carreras another opportunity to establish himself.
That stance has strengthened Real Madrid's negotiating position.
The Spanish giants are only expected to consider offers of around €50m for the former Benfica player.
Chelsea face major transfer decision
Chelsea are aware of Real Madrid's valuation and must now decide whether to return with an improved offer.
Reports suggest Alonso believes regular first-team football could persuade Carreras to move to London after losing his starting role in Madrid.
However, Chelsea would need to convince both the player and Real Madrid before any deal could progress.
At €50m, Carreras would represent another significant investment as Alonso continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new season.
