Chelsea caretaker boss Calum McFarlane has admitted the last 48 hours have been “crazy” after being thrust into the spotlight ahead of a daunting trip to face Manchester City at the Etihad.

The 40-year-old Under-21s coach was unexpectedly promoted following Enzo Maresca’s sudden exit, and will now lead Chelsea in one of the toughest fixtures in English football.

McFarlane’s first official words as Chelsea’s interim head coach summed up the scale of the moment.

“A whirlwind, but also very exciting,” he admitted, describing a surreal New Year’s Day that saw family plans abruptly abandoned for emergency talks at Cobham.

Within an hour of receiving the call, McFarlane had assembled members of his Under-21s staff and begun preparations for Sunday’s clash, a match few caretakers would willingly choose as their managerial debut.

Chelsea are already progressing with their permanent search, with Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading candidate, but for now, McFarlane carries the responsibility.

Chelsea have had just two training sessions under McFarlane, following Maresca’s decision to grant the squad time off after a disappointing 2–2 draw with Bournemouth.

That lack of preparation is compounded by key absences. Moises Caicedo is suspended, while Marc Cucurellaremains a fitness doubt.

Despite the upheaval, McFarlane has made it clear he will not attempt radical tactical changes.

“There’s been some really good work done previously,” he said. “It’s about building on that, not reinventing the wheel.”

The caretaker coach highlighted the leadership of Reece James, praising the skipper for steadying a young squad still reeling from managerial change.

Chelsea supporters may accept many outcomes on Sunday, but effort and organisation are non-negotiable.
