Brighton have completed the signing of Luka Vušković from Tottenham Hotspur in a club-record deal worth €54 million, bringing an extraordinary three-year journey to an end before the defender had even made a senior appearance for Spurs.
The 19-year-old Croatian centre-back was first signed by Tottenham in 2023 after becoming the youngest player ever to debut in Croatia's top flight for Hajduk Split. However, a series of loan spells meant he never featured competitively for the North London club before being sold to another Premier League side.
The transfer also ranks among Tottenham's biggest sales, trailing only the departures of Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Kyle Walker.
Tottenham cash in without a first-team appearance
Tottenham agreed to sign Vušković in 2023 for around €11 million, although the move was only completed officially after he turned 18.
Instead of joining Ange Postecoglou's first team immediately, the Croatian spent time on loan with Radomiak Radom, Westerlo and most recently Hamburg, where his reputation soared.
Spurs have now secured a huge profit, with Brighton paying €54 million, while Tottenham also negotiated €4.7 million in potential bonuses and retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
It represents remarkable business for a player who never wore the club's shirt in a competitive match.
Hamburg loan transformed his value
Vušković's breakthrough came during his loan spell in Germany.
The defender scored six goals in 30 appearances for Hamburg and established himself as one of the Bundesliga's outstanding young players.
His performances earned him recognition as the league's second-best young player, finishing behind RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, while he also collected the award for the Bundesliga's Goal of the Year after scoring from an assist provided by Fábio Vieira.
Those displays, combined with his first appearance at the World Cup for Croatia this summer, significantly increased his market value and attracted Brighton's attention.
Brighton invest in another defensive talent
Brighton's move continues the club's reputation for investing heavily in elite young talent with long-term potential.
Interestingly, the transfer comes only weeks after Tottenham signed defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth around €60 million, creating an intriguing exchange of central defenders between the two Premier League clubs.
Whether Vušković can justify becoming Brighton's most expensive signing remains to be seen, but the Seagulls clearly believe they have secured one of European football's brightest defensive prospects.

What's next?

Tottenham, meanwhile, will continue to benefit from the deal through future bonuses and their retained sell-on percentage if the Croatian defender develops into one of Europe's elite centre-backs.
Has Brighton secured one of the bargains of the summer, or did Tottenham make the right decision to cash in before Luka Vušković had even played for the club?
