Axel Disasi could yet have a future at Chelsea after earning praise for his performances during a productive loan spell at West Ham United.

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes the centre-back’s improvement in east London may force Chelsea to reconsider his long-term role once a new permanent manager is appointed this summer.

Disasi’s situation has shifted dramatically over the last 18 months.

After falling out of favour under Enzo Maresca and later struggling for opportunities during Liam Rosenior’s short spell in charge, the French international was effectively pushed to the fringes before eventually joining West Ham on loan in February.

Now, his form is beginning to attract fresh attention.

From Chelsea “bomb squad” to regular football

Disasi’s Chelsea career appeared close to ending earlier this season.

The defender had not played for the Blues since January 2025 before first joining Aston Villa FC on loan and later moving across London to West Ham.

At the time, Chelsea’s defensive rotation and managerial instability left several players isolated from the first-team picture.

Having followed Chelsea’s chaotic season closely, constant tactical changes and injuries created an environment where continuity became almost impossible for many squad players.

Disasi became one of the biggest casualties of that instability. However, his performances at West Ham have helped rebuild his reputation.

Glen Johnson sees possible Chelsea return

Johnson believes the defender’s improved displays have reopened the conversation around his future.

Speaking about Disasi’s situation, the former Chelsea full-back suggested the reduced pressure at West Ham may have helped the player rediscover confidence.

“He’s gone to West Ham and he’s performed much, much better than he was at Chelsea.”

Johnson also hinted Chelsea could revisit the situation once a new manager arrives at Stamford Bridge.

“If he’s on the upward trajectory now, I’m sure Chelsea will be looking back at him.”

That possibility becomes more interesting given Chelsea are expected to undergo another significant reset this summer following further managerial upheaval.

Why Disasi’s future remains uncertain

Despite the improved form, several obstacles still stand in the way of a Chelsea revival.

The club remain heavily stocked in central defence when fully fit, and Disasi’s previous struggles at Stamford Bridge have not been forgotten internally.

Chelsea originally paid around £38.5 million to sign the French defender from AS Monaco FC in 2023, handing him a long-term contract running until 2029.

That contract length still gives Chelsea leverage over his future. However, the most realistic outcome may still involve a permanent transfer elsewhere if a suitable offer arrives.

West Ham’s interest in extending his stay could also depend on whether they secure Premier League survival.

Loan spell has restored value

Even if Disasi ultimately leaves Chelsea permanently, his time at West Ham has arguably achieved one important objective: restoring market value.

The defender has featured regularly during a difficult period for the Hammers and helped improve a back line that had looked increasingly vulnerable earlier in the campaign.

At 28, he still has significant experience at both Premier League and international level, including five senior appearances for France.

However, it remains too early to know whether Chelsea’s next manager will genuinely reintegrate him into first-team plans.

What’s next?

Chelsea’s next permanent managerial appointment is likely to shape several uncertain squad futures — including Disasi’s.

For the defender, finishing the season strongly at West Ham could improve his chances of either earning another opportunity at Stamford Bridge or securing a high-level permanent move elsewhere.

The coming transfer window may now prove decisive. Should Chelsea give Axel Disasi another chance next season?
