Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a January offer for River Plate goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán, with Unai Emery's side considering further reinforcements despite signing Zion Suzuki during the summer.

The 22-year-old Argentine international has attracted attention from European clubs after establishing himself as River's first-choice goalkeeper in 2026.

According to Argentine outlet El Intransigente, Villa could submit a proposal worth between $10million and $15million (£7.6m–£11.4m) when the winter transfer window opens.

However, River Plate are working to extend Beltrán's contract and significantly increase his release clause, potentially complicating negotiations.

Aston Villa ready to make Santiago Beltrán offer

Beltrán progressed through River Plate's academy before making his senior debut earlier this year.

The goalkeeper has since made 45 competitive appearances for the Argentine club, keeping 20 clean sheets according to River Plate statistical records.

His breakthrough came after he began pre-season as the club's fourth-choice goalkeeper, with injuries and changes in the squad eventually providing an opportunity.

Beltrán also made his senior Argentina debut against Honduras in June and received another international call-up in October.

However, his performances have been less consistent during the second half of the year, with Argentine newspaper La Nación reporting concerns about a decline in form.

That has not prevented speculation about a move to Europe.

Aston Villa and Manchester United have both been linked with Beltrán, although neither club has confirmed making an official offer.

Reports have also suggested that former Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez recommended the youngster to his former club, but that claim remains unconfirmed.

River Plate working on €100m release clause

River Plate are attempting to strengthen their negotiating position before the January transfer window.

Club president Stéfano Di Carlo is overseeing discussions to extend Beltrán's existing contract, which expires in December 2027.

According to La Nación, negotiations have focused on a new agreement running until December 2029 and a release clause worth €100million.

Other Argentine reports have suggested a possible extension until 2030 and quoted the proposed clause in US dollars rather than euros.

The precise terms therefore remain unclear, and no completed agreement has been announced.

Crucially, the proposed release clause should not be confused with Beltrán's expected transfer fee.

El Intransigente reports that Villa's potential offer would be between $10million and $15million, substantially below the amount River hope to establish as contractual protection.

Whether River would entertain a proposal in that range remains uncertain.

Unai Emery considering goalkeeper competition

Villa signed Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma during the summer, with the goalkeeper subsequently establishing himself as Emery's first choice.

Suzuki has retained the manager's support despite a costly mistake during Villa's recent draw with Fulham.

Beltrán could provide additional competition and a longer-term option, although his exact role would depend on Villa's plans and any agreement with River Plate.

At 22, the Argentine has already gained substantial first-team experience and earned international recognition.

Nevertheless, a transfer would require Villa to convince River to sell a player the club are actively trying to secure on a longer contract.

There is currently no confirmation of an agreed fee or personal terms.

Key Points

  • Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a January offer for Santiago Beltrán.
  • El Intransigente suggests a potential bid of $10m–$15m.
  • The River Plate goalkeeper has made 45 appearances and kept 20 clean sheets.
  • Beltrán made his senior Argentina debut in June 2026.
  • River want to extend his contract and introduce a substantially higher release clause.

What's Next?

Aston Villa could formalise their interest when the January transfer window opens, but River Plate's contract negotiations may influence their willingness to sell.

Beltrán's immediate focus remains on his performances in Argentina, while Villa must decide whether another goalkeeper is a priority after Suzuki's summer arrival.
