Andre Onana's future appears to be moving closer to a permanent resolution after Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan revealed the Turkish club are holding daily discussions with the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The Cameroon international spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Trabzonspor after falling out of Manchester United's long-term plans, and the Süper Lig side are now determined to make the move permanent.

Speaking about the negotiations, Doğan expressed confidence that an agreement can be reached and insisted finances will not prevent the club from securing the goalkeeper's signature.

Trabzonspor confident of completing deal

Onana enjoyed a regular run of football during his season in Turkey, making 33 appearances across all competitions.

While his statistics were mixed, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper re-established himself as a first-choice option after a difficult spell at Old Trafford.

Trabzonspor's hierarchy appear convinced that retaining him is the right move, with Doğan revealing the level of communication already taking place behind the scenes.

The club president stated that conversations with Onana are taking place every day and suggested he does not expect any major obstacles to emerge during negotiations.

He also made it clear that Trabzonspor have contingency plans in place but remain focused on completing a deal for the Manchester United player.

Manchester United ready to move on

The situation reflects how dramatically Onana's standing has changed since arriving at Old Trafford in 2023.

Manchester United invested more than €50 million to sign the goalkeeper, viewing him as the long-term successor between the posts following his impressive performances under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and Inter Milan.

However, that investment has failed to deliver the expected return.

The emergence of Senne Lammens as Manchester United's established number one has further reduced any realistic pathway back into the first team for Onana.

As a result, a permanent departure this summer increasingly appears to be the most practical outcome for all parties.

Financial reality facing United

One of the key questions surrounding negotiations is the transfer fee.

Manchester United paid approximately €50.23 million for Onana three years ago, but his market value has fallen significantly since then.

Any deal is likely to represent a substantial loss on the original investment.

Having followed United’s squad restructuring closely in recent months, the club’s priority appears to be creating room within the wage bill and generating funds for further recruitment rather than maximising profit on outgoing players.

That could strengthen Trabzonspor’s position during negotiations.

The numbers suggest a solid rather than spectacular campaign, but one that was sufficient to convince Trabzonspor to pursue a permanent transfer.

Key Points

  • Trabzonspor are in daily contact with Andre Onana.
  • Club president Ertuğrul Doğan is confident a deal can be completed.
  • Onana spent the season on loan in Turkey.
  • Manchester United are expected to sanction a permanent exit.
  • The transfer could result in a significant financial loss for United.

What’s next?

Negotiations are expected to continue throughout June as Trabzonspor attempt to agree a fee with Manchester United.

The Turkish side appear optimistic about reaching an agreement with the player, meaning discussions between the clubs could become the decisive stage of the process. However, the final valuation remains subject to negotiation, particularly if Trabzonspor seek a discount on the goalkeeper's current market price.

Should Manchester United accept a reduced fee to move Onana on quickly, or hold firm in pursuit of a better financial return?
