Aston Villa have suffered a major setback after Amadou Onana sustained a serious knee injury during Belgium’s World Cup win over the United States.

The 24-year-old midfielder was forced off early in Belgium’s 4-1 last-16 victory in Seattle and is believed to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for 7-8 months.

Onana is now set for an extended spell on the sidelines, creating a major concern for Villa ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Aston Villa hit by Amadou Onana injury concern

Onana’s injury could significantly alter Villa’s summer transfer plans.

The club had not been expected to prioritise a new midfielder, especially with Boubacar Kamara nearing a return from his own serious knee injury. However, losing Onana for a large part of the campaign would leave Unai Emery short of power and presence in the middle of the pitch.

Villa paid £50 million to sign Onana from Everton two years ago, making him one of the club’s biggest investments. Since then, he has made 72 appearances in all competitions, although persistent minor injury issues have occasionally interrupted his rhythm.

This latest setback is far more serious.

Key Points

  • Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury at the World Cup.
  • The Belgium international is believed to have torn the ACL in his right knee.
  • Onana was forced off early during Belgium’s 4-1 win over the USA.
  • Villa may now have to reconsider their midfield transfer plans this summer.
  • The 24-year-old has made 72 appearances since his £50m move from Everton.

What’s next?

Villa are expected to wait for full medical confirmation before making a final decision on their transfer strategy.

If Onana is ruled out for a long period, the club may be forced back into the market for midfield cover despite Kamara’s expected return. For Belgium, the injury also removes one of their most important midfielders ahead of the World Cup quarter-finals.

Could Onana’s injury force Aston Villa into an unexpected midfield signing?
