Alan Shearer has praised Moisés Caicedo's defensive contribution after Chelsea thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
While Jordan Henderson and João Pedro grabbed the headlines with two goals each, Shearer believes Caicedo's work in midfield was crucial to Chelsea's dominant performance under Xabi Alonso.
Shearer highlights Caicedo's importance to Chelsea
Caicedo returned to Chelsea's starting line-up after a calf injury had restricted him to just 14 minutes of football this season.
Despite his lengthy absence, the Ecuador international delivered an impressive performance, protecting the defence and helping Chelsea transition quickly into attack.
Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shearer highlighted the midfielder's ability to handle the physical demands of the game while keeping possession moving.
“Caicedo makes such a difference to this Chelsea team because of his experience and his ability in that midfield both defensively and when he wins that ball,” Shearer explained.
The former Newcastle striker particularly praised Caicedo's involvement in Henderson's opening goal.
“It’s simple but the way he gets the ball… first thought is forward,” he added.
Henderson and João Pedro inspire Chelsea victory
Henderson opened the scoring inside two minutes on his Stamford Bridge home debut before Morgan Rogers doubled Chelsea's advantage.
João Pedro then scored twice, with Bournemouth striker Evanilson also finding the net for the visitors.
Henderson completed the scoring with an excellent free-kick in the 70th minute.
Shearer believes Caicedo's positioning allowed Henderson to push forward without leaving Chelsea exposed defensively.
The victory lifted Alonso's side to fifth in the Premier League, behind Brentford on goal difference.
Chelsea will now look to build on that result when they travel to Everton next weekend.
