Alan Shearer questions Eddie Howe exit as Newcastle face growing uncertainty

Alan Shearer has questioned the timing of Eddie Howe's surprise departure from Newcastle United, admitting he is struggling to understand the club's direction after a turbulent summer at St James' Park.

Howe is understood to have left Newcastle by mutual agreement after almost five years in charge, ending one of the most successful managerial spells in the club's modern history. His departure comes just weeks before the start of the new Premier League season and follows a series of high-profile player exits.

Club legend Shearer believes the timing raises serious questions about Newcastle's current trajectory.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer admitted he did not expect Howe to leave so close to the start of the new campaign.

"I'm very, very surprised with the news that Eddie Howe is leaving Newcastle. I guess it's strange timing with three weeks to go until the new season kicks off."

The Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer suggested Howe may have become frustrated by Newcastle's transfer business after the departures of several key players.

"I don't know what's gone on, whether it was the end of last season, whether it was the summer, whether he feels they can't continue to sell his best players."

Shearer also indicated he believes the decision ultimately came from Howe himself.

Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer, while continued speculation surrounds captain Bruno Guimaraes, who has been strongly linked with Arsenal.

Shearer believes those departures have created uncertainty both inside and outside the club.

"It's certainly not a good look. The fans are seeing Isak go, the fans are seeing Tonali go, the fans are seeing Gordon go."

He added that Bruno could now be considering his own future after seeing several important figures leave the club.

"It's probably only a matter of time before Bruno goes… It's certainly not a good look, and they'll have to navigate some tough waves coming their way now."

Saudi-based coach Matthias Jaissle has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Howe after an impressive spell with Al Ahli.

While Shearer acknowledged the German's achievements, he warned that replacing Howe at Newcastle represents an enormous challenge.

"Clearly, he's got a great record in Saudi. Clearly, he's very young and inexperienced. The Premier League is a beast of a league."

Shearer also believes Howe will have no shortage of opportunities after leaving St James' Park.

The former Newcastle striker expects clubs from both England and abroad to pursue the 48-year-old once he decides to return to management following a well-earned break.

Newcastle are expected to accelerate their search for Howe's successor, with Matthias Jaissle among the frontrunners to take charge before the Premier League season begins. The club must also address ongoing uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimaraes and continue rebuilding the squad after a summer of significant departures.
