Chelsea are preparing to hand highly rated goalkeeper Mike Penders an extended opportunity following Emi Martinez's broken jaw, with manager Xabi Alonso confident the Belgian youngster is ready for Premier League football.

Martinez underwent surgery after suffering the injury against Everton, leaving Chelsea without their experienced first-choice goalkeeper for several weeks.

Penders, who turned 21 in July, is now expected to step into the starting line-up, beginning with Saturday's Premier League encounter against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

Despite his age, Chelsea believe his development at Genk and successful loan spell in France have prepared him for the challenge.

Who is Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders?

Penders is a Belgian goalkeeper who developed through Genk's renowned academy, the same club that produced Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois.

Genk have established an impressive reputation for developing goalkeepers, with specialist coach Guy Martens playing a central role in their training programme.

The academy places particular emphasis on technical ability and distribution, encouraging young players to become comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Penders joined Genk from Bregel Sport aged 13 and developed into one of Belgium's most promising goalkeeping talents.

Chelsea agreed to sign him in August 2024, with the youngster officially arriving the following summer.

He subsequently joined Strasbourg on loan for the 2025/26 season, keeping eight clean sheets in 33 Ligue 1 appearances.

Xabi Alonso backs Penders after Everton appearance

Penders made an encouraging appearance against Everton after Martinez was forced off, showing confidence when dealing with crosses and organising Chelsea's defence.

Alonso praised the youngster's composure and personality after the match.

"He has personality, is brave, and we have full trust in him," the Chelsea manager said.

"Whenever he is needed, he can perform."

His ability to play out from the back also suits Alonso's preferred approach, making him a natural option while Martinez recovers.

Chelsea have additional cover in Teddy Sharman-Lowe, who gained senior experience during loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.
