Vitor Reis impresses in pre-season as Manchester City consider defender’s future

Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has praised Vitor Reis for his performances during the club's pre-season tour of Asia, with the Brazilian defender's future set to be decided before the 2026/27 campaign begins.

Reis returned to City this summer after a productive loan spell at fellow City Football Group club Girona. The 20-year-old made 36 La Liga appearances during the 2025/26 season, earning widespread praise for his displays in Spain.

Since rejoining the squad, the centre-back has featured in the second half of Manchester City's friendlies against Inter and the K-League All Stars, giving Maresca another opportunity to assess his progress.

The City boss believes Reis has made a strong impression since reporting back for pre-season.

"Vitor is working very well," Maresca said.

"I am happy with him."

The Italian also explained that the club will wait until pre-season has concluded before making a final decision on the defender's immediate future.

"The only thing is for most of the young players here with us, the plan is to finish pre-season and then take the final decision."

"And we will take the best decision for them, not just us."

Manchester City are expected to review the futures of several young players before the new campaign gets underway, with Reis among those under consideration.

After gaining valuable top-flight experience in Spain, the Brazilian has strengthened his case for a place in the senior squad, although another loan or a permanent role in Maresca's plans remain possible.

The coming weeks are expected to determine the next stage in the defender's development as City finalise their squad for the 2026/27 season.

Manchester City are expected to make a final decision on Reis once their pre-season programme concludes. The defender's performances during the Asian tour will form part of that assessment as the club decides whether he remains with the first team or continues his development elsewhere.
