Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has challenged his players to become genuine Champions League contenders after their emphatic 6-0 victory over Fenerbahce at Villa Park.

The result marked Villa's biggest European victory and their first home win of the season, with Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both scoring twice alongside goals from Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham.

Despite the convincing scoreline, Emery insisted there is still considerable room for improvement as Villa look to establish themselves among Europe's leading clubs.

Emery demands more despite Aston Villa's record European victory

Villa's six-goal triumph provided a significant boost following a difficult start to the domestic campaign, but Emery was not entirely satisfied with his team's performance.

The Spanish manager acknowledged that Fenerbahce created dangerous opportunities during the first half, despite Villa entering the interval with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

"We are delighted with the first win at home. Then how we played in the first half I was not so happy," Emery explained.

"They didn't score but Zion [Suzuki] played fantastic, they hit the crossbar."

Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced an important save to deny Vedat Muriqi, while Oguz Aydin struck the crossbar as the Turkish visitors threatened to reduce the deficit.

Villa improved their defensive organisation after half-time and added three more goals, demonstrating the clinical finishing that Emery wants his side to develop consistently.

The manager admitted the final score was harsh on Fenerbahce but highlighted the importance of the result for his team's confidence and development.

Aston Villa target Champions League qualification after perfect start

Villa have collected maximum points from their opening two Champions League fixtures, putting them in a promising position in the league-phase standings.

Emery believes the team's attacking versatility is becoming an important strength, with goals arriving through different situations rather than reliance on a single approach.

"We must exploit the different aspects of our capacity and sometimes we can score through set pieces. Sometimes we can score through transition in high press," he said.

The Villa manager also acknowledged that integrating new players and improving the team's overall balance will require further work.

"Our structure is strong, but we need more time. We are progressively getting better, progressively getting the balance that we need and today we took one very big step forwards."

Emery then made his European ambitions clear.

"Those three points for us in the table is important and we are being ambitious. We want to be protagonists in the Champions League."

With two victories already secured, Villa have given themselves a strong foundation in their pursuit of automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

Jackson and Manzambi shine in six-goal performance

Nicolas Jackson continued his encouraging form with two first-half goals, although the forward missed an opportunity to complete his hat-trick when Villa were awarded a second-half penalty.

Ross Barkley took responsibility from the spot, converting in the 68th minute before adding another goal four minutes later with a deflected effort.

Speaking to TNT Sports afterwards, Jackson played down any personal disappointment.

"The most important thing is we win. Hopefully next time I'll get the hat trick."

The forward also praised Johan Manzambi, who celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring on his Champions League debut.

"He's a top player. I'm really happy we're playing together. I hope we score many more goals together," Jackson said.

For Manzambi, the occasion was particularly memorable, with his family watching from the stands at Villa Park.

"My first Champions League game and my first goal - on my birthday. My family are here. That's very nice for me," he said.

The performances of Jackson, Manzambi and Barkley demonstrated Villa's growing attacking options as Emery continues to develop his squad for the demands of European competition.
