Chelsea have reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to sign left-back Pep Chavarría, with the Spanish defender travelling to London to complete his medical.

The Blues have been pursuing the 28-year-old for several weeks after identifying him as the replacement for Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Chelsea finally strike agreement

According to Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano reached a breakthrough in negotiations on Thursday night.

The deal is expected to be worth €19 million upfront, with a further €2 million in performance-related bonuses.

Earlier reports had suggested Chelsea could pay closer to €25 million, although the latest claims indicate the overall package will be lower.

Chavarría had already agreed personal terms with Chelsea in July, leaving the two clubs to negotiate a transfer fee.

Medical scheduled in London

The left-back has been training separately in recent days while awaiting permission to complete the move.

With an agreement now in place, Rayo Vallecano have authorised Chavarría to travel to England.

The report states the defender flew to London on Friday to undergo his medical and finalise his contract with Chelsea.

Only the formalities remain before the transfer is officially confirmed.

Alonso gets his target

Head coach Xabi Alonso had made signing a new left-back one of Chelsea's priorities following Cucurella's departure.

Chavarría is expected to provide immediate competition and depth on the left side of the defence as the Blues continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.
