Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur over the signing of Cristian Romero, with negotiations now turning to the defender's personal terms.

According to reports in Italy, the two clubs have agreed a transfer worth around €40 million, moving the Serie A giants a significant step closer to landing the Argentina international.

While the transfer fee has now been settled, Inter must still reach an agreement with Romero's representatives before the move can be completed.

Inter strike agreement with Tottenham

The report states that Tottenham have accepted a deal worth approximately €40 million for the 28-year-old centre-back.

Romero's departure from North London has been expected for some time, and negotiations between the clubs have now been successfully concluded.

Inter head coach Cristian Chivu has identified the World Cup winner as one of his priority defensive targets following the arrival of John Stones earlier this summer.

The former Atalanta defender spent five seasons at Tottenham, making 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals and helping the club win the UEFA Europa League in 2025.

Salary remains major obstacle

Although the clubs have reached an agreement, discussions over Romero's contract are still ongoing.

According to the report, the defender's representatives are demanding a salary of €6 million net per season, a figure Inter currently consider too high.

The Nerazzurri are expected to continue negotiations in an attempt to reduce those wage demands before finalising the transfer.

Atlético Madrid are also said to remain interested, with the Spanish club still capable of making a rival proposal if talks with Inter stall.

Romero arrival could trigger another exit

The report adds that Romero's arrival would likely spell the end of Benjamin Pavard's time at Inter.

The French defender is expected to leave permanently if the Argentine completes his move, allowing Inter to reshape their defensive options.

Romero would join a centre-back group including John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Yann Bisseck, Alessandro Bastoni and Carlos Augusto ahead of the new campaign.
