Tim Sherwood sends Frank Lampard warning over Coventry City survival

Former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood believes Frank Lampard could become the latest managerial casualty unless Coventry City provide him with the backing needed to survive in the Premier League.

Lampard guided the Sky Blues to the Championship title last season in his first full campaign at the CBS Arena, earning widespread praise for transforming the club into promotion winners. However, Sherwood believes the real challenge starts now.

Speaking about Coventry's return to the top flight, Sherwood insisted Lampard has already shown he is capable of delivering success but warned that promotion alone guarantees nothing.

"I like Frank. I think he's a great manager."

The former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss believes too many newly-promoted clubs fail because they aren't properly strengthened during the transfer window.

"He's a young English manager who has proved he can take a team to promotion, but if he isn't given the tools to succeed in the Premier League, he'll probably end up getting sacked."

Sherwood argued that managers are often blamed when relegation arrives, even though recruitment and investment play an equally important role.

Coventry have enjoyed an impressive rise under Lampard, but survival in the Premier League will require another significant step forward.

The club have already been linked with several experienced additions this summer as they prepare for life back among England's elite.

Sherwood believes the responsibility now lies with the club's hierarchy to provide Lampard with a squad capable of competing.

"People start pointing fingers when a newly promoted club is immediately relegated, saying 'the manager isn't good enough', but I don't think that's the case."

"It is on the club for not doing enough to help them stay up."

Like many promoted clubs before them, Coventry face the challenge of balancing financial discipline with the need to improve the squad.

Sherwood believes standing still simply isn't an option.

"Getting to the Premier League doesn't give you a magic wand to stay there. Frank needs to be given the support from the club and the players in order to do that."
