Sunderland ready to spend €40m on top defensive target

Sunderland are prepared to spend heavily on a new centre-back, with Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemović emerging as their priority target ahead of Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Black Cats have the financial power to meet Sassuolo’s €40 million asking price for Muharemović following their qualification for the Europa League.

If a deal for the 23-year-old proves difficult, Sunderland could instead activate the €28 million release clause in Lucumí’s Bologna contract.

Muharemović has attracted interest after establishing himself at Sassuolo following his arrival from Juventus.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international initially joined on loan in 2024 before the move became permanent a year later. His performances have since drawn attention from Sunderland, Bournemouth and Juventus.

Sunderland are now reportedly in a strong position.

The Black Cats are said to have no problem meeting Sassuolo’s €40 million valuation or satisfying Muharemović’s salary demands of between €3 million and €4 million per year.

Those wages have complicated Juventus’ attempt to bring the defender back, but they are not expected to present the same obstacle for Sunderland.

Muharemović’s age is a major reason why he sits above Lucumí on the club’s shortlist. At 23, he would offer immediate quality while retaining significant long-term value.

Lucumí is the alternative if Sunderland decide against spending €40 million on Muharemović.

The Black Cats made concrete attempts to sign the Colombia international last summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Bologna.

Their interest has not disappeared.

Lucumí has a €28 million release clause that is reportedly valid until mid-July, giving Sunderland a clear route to a deal if they decide to move quickly.

At 28, the Bologna defender offers a different profile. He would bring more experience, while Muharemović represents the younger and more expensive investment.

Sunderland’s choice could have a major impact on Juventus.

The Turin club reportedly hold a 50% sell-on clause for Muharemović. A €40 million transfer to the Stadium of Light could therefore generate significant funds for Juventus.

That money could then help them pursue Lucumí.

Alternatively, if Sunderland activate the Colombian’s release clause, Juventus would face less competition for Muharemović.

The situation means Sunderland’s decision could shape more than one major Serie A transfer this summer.

Sunderland must decide whether to invest €40 million in the younger Muharemović or move for the more experienced Lucumí at a lower price.

Time could become important because Lucumí’s €28 million release clause is only valid until mid-July. A decision from the Black Cats may also determine Juventus’ next move in the defensive market.
