Simon Grayson has admitted the timing of his Leeds United dismissal remains a source of frustration, while describing current manager Daniel Farke as the “perfect fit” for the club.

A boyhood Leeds supporter, Grayson spent four years in charge and guided the Whites out of League One in 2010. His tenure ended in February 2012, shortly after the January transfer window had closed and with Leeds still within reach of the Championship play-off places.

Speaking on The Managers podcast with Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis, the 56-year-old reflected on a departure which Leeds supporters still raise with him.

“It was so frustrating,” Grayson said. “Lots of Leeds fans, even now, say ‘you were unlucky that you got the sack’.”

Despite that disappointment, Grayson insists he would not change how he handled his time at Elland Road.

“These things are taken out of your hands at times. I don’t think I’d have done anything differently. That’s what you have to live by at times.”

Grayson turned down opportunity to return to Leeds

Grayson subsequently rebuilt his managerial career, earning another League One promotion with Huddersfield Town before repeating the achievement with Preston North End.

While managing Preston, he says an opportunity emerged to return to Leeds.

Emotionally, the prospect appealed to him. The presence of then-owner Massimo Cellino, however, convinced Grayson that returning was not the right decision.

“I’d have loved to have gone back,” he said. “My heart’s telling me to go back but my head’s going ‘I can’t work with you’.”

It meant Grayson’s first spell remained his only period as Leeds manager, despite his longstanding connection with the club.

Daniel Farke called ‘perfect fit’ for Leeds

Grayson believes the situation at Leeds is considerably more stable today, highlighting the club’s ownership and Farke’s management.

“I think they’re very settled at the moment, with the ownership, the 49ers have been really good,” he said.

Grayson has been particularly impressed by Farke’s temperament and believes his ability to remain composed through both victories and defeats suits the demands of managing Leeds.

“I think Daniel’s a fantastic coach - really composed and really relaxed about it, doesn’t get too carried away when he’s winning. He doesn’t get too low when he’s losing games.”

He went further by describing Farke as the right manager for a club where the relationship between the team, city and supporters can carry considerable importance.

“He’s the perfect fit and he gets what you need to do for a club like Leeds and the connection you need with the city and the supporters,” Grayson said.

“You’ve got their backing, you’ve got a great opportunity to be really successful.”

What’s Next

Farke’s task is to build on the stability Grayson believes Leeds now possess and continue establishing the club in the Premier League.

For Grayson, the prospect of returning to Elland Road belongs to an earlier chapter. His comments instead underline how differently he views the club’s current position compared with the uncertainty surrounding his own departure and subsequent opportunity to return.

With Farke retaining the backing of the ownership and, in Grayson’s view, understanding the relationship required with the Leeds support, the former manager believes the foundations are there for sustained success.
