Simon Adingra is closing in on another Sunderland exit, with Ajax now completing the final details of a loan agreement for the winger.

According to journalist Mike Verweij, the 24-year-old has already passed his medical ahead of a season-long move to Amsterdam. Ajax's agreement with Sunderland includes an option to buy, although the value of that clause has not been disclosed.

The remaining formalities are expected to be completed before the Dutch transfer deadline.

Ajax close in after making Adingra priority

Ajax identified Adingra as their priority replacement for Mika Godts following his move to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer.

The proposed package will reportedly cost the Dutch club around €3.8million in combined wages and loan fees.

Sunderland have been willing to sanction another temporary departure after completing the Deadline Day signing of Malick Fofana from Lyon, further reducing Adingra's prospects of regular football under Régis Le Bris.

The Ivory Coast international also spent the second half of last season on loan at Monaco, who paid Sunderland around €1m for that spell.

Sunderland's €24.4m signing has struggled

Adingra's situation represents a disappointing outcome for Sunderland following the significant investment made to sign him from Brighton last summer.

The Black Cats paid €24.4m for the winger following their promotion from the Championship, but he has subsequently managed only 15 appearances and 729 minutes for the club.

Another loan after only one year underlines how quickly he has fallen out of Sunderland's plans.

Ajax will now provide Adingra with an opportunity to rebuild his momentum and potentially secure a permanent move.

For Sunderland, the €3.8m package provides another opportunity to recover part of their original investment, but the more important question will be whether Ajax eventually activate their purchase option.

Key Points

  • Simon Adingra is in the final stages of joining Ajax on loan from Sunderland.
  • The 24-year-old has already passed his medical.
  • Ajax will have an option to buy, although its value has not been reported.
  • Sunderland originally paid €24.4m for Adingra, who has played only 729 minutes for the club.
  • Malick Fofana's Deadline Day arrival further reduced Adingra's opportunities.

What’s Next?

Ajax and Sunderland now need to complete the final paperwork before the Dutch transfer deadline, with the deal described as only a matter of time.

Attention will then turn to whether Adingra can rediscover his best form in Amsterdam. A successful season could convince Ajax to activate their purchase option and bring his disappointing Sunderland spell to a permanent end.
