Chelsea have received a timely injury boost after head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed Romeo Lavia is fit and available for Saturday's pre-season clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney.

The Belgian midfielder missed Chelsea's opening tour fixture against Western Sydney Wanderers after experiencing hamstring discomfort, but Alonso has now revealed the 22-year-old is back in contention.

It marks another positive step in Lavia's recovery after an injury-plagued spell since his move from Southampton.

Alonso confirms Lavia is available

Speaking ahead of the match against Tottenham, Alonso confirmed there are no fitness concerns surrounding Lavia.

"He is okay for tomorrow."

Despite the encouraging update, Chelsea are expected to manage the midfielder's workload carefully.

Lavia has struggled with injuries ever since joining the Blues in a £58 million move from Southampton in 2023 and is still yet to complete a full 90 minutes for the club.

With Chelsea playing on a surface that drew criticism during the 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso may choose not to take unnecessary risks.

Injury frustrations continue to shape comeback

Lavia's latest hamstring concern prompted Chelsea's medical staff to leave him out of the opening match of the pre-season tour as a precaution.

The cautious approach reflects the club's determination to avoid another setback after two difficult years in which the Belgium international has repeatedly been sidelined.

Chelsea view Lavia as a key part of Alonso's midfield plans, making his long-term fitness a priority ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Caicedo and Jackson also return

Chelsea have also welcomed back Moisés Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson after both players were granted extended breaks following the World Cup.

Alonso reserved special praise for Caicedo, describing the Ecuador international as one of the world's elite defensive midfielders.

"For me, one of the best holding midfielders in the world, no doubt."

The Chelsea boss added that he had admired Caicedo from afar before working with him and is now looking forward to helping him continue his development.

The return of both Caicedo and Jackson gives Chelsea a near full-strength squad as preparations for the new season continue.
