Enzo Maresca issues Rodri transfer update amid Real Madrid interest

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has reaffirmed Rodri's importance to the club after addressing growing speculation linking the Spain international with a move to Real Madrid.

The midfielder remains one of Madrid's top transfer targets this summer, but Maresca insists there have been no discussions suggesting Rodri is close to leaving the Etihad Stadium.

Instead, the City boss expects the Ballon d'Or winner to return after his summer break and continue playing a pivotal role in the club's plans for the new season.

Speaking ahead of Manchester City's pre-season friendly against Inter Milan, Maresca was asked about Rodri's future amid persistent interest from Real Madrid.

The Italian manager acknowledged the midfielder's importance while playing down the transfer rumours.

"It's just speculation in this moment."

Maresca also stressed that any club in world football would want a player of Rodri's quality.

"Any manager in the world wants Rodri, so it's important for me, for the club and for everyone."

With Rodri entering the final year of his current contract, uncertainty has grown over his long-term future, but City remain in a strong negotiating position and are under no obligation to sell.

Rodri recently underwent successful back surgery after representing Spain at the World Cup.

Maresca confirmed the procedure went as planned and revealed the midfielder is now enjoying a short holiday before returning to Manchester.

"Rodri had surgery last Monday, everything was fine. Now some days off and then back with us when he has finished the holiday."

The City boss indicated that the player's immediate priority is recovering fully before beginning preparations for the new campaign.

Real Madrid remain interested in bringing Rodri to the Santiago Bernabéu, with reports suggesting new manager José Mourinho is keen to make the Manchester City star the cornerstone of his midfield.

Any move may depend on Madrid generating funds through player sales, with Aurélien Tchouaméni among those linked with a possible departure.

For now, however, Manchester City are maintaining their stance and continue to view Rodri as one of the most important players in Maresca's squad.
