Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez believes the Blues can mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season, insisting the absence of European football could become a major advantage under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
After finishing 10th last season, Chelsea have entered a new era with Alonso at the helm, and Sanchez is confident the club can surprise Arsenal, Manchester City and the rest of the title contenders.
Sanchez sees silver lining in European absence
Chelsea will not compete in Europe this season after their disappointing league campaign, but Sanchez believes the lighter schedule could work in the club's favour.
The Spain international feels having one match a week will allow Alonso's squad to focus fully on domestic competition.
"I think this year is a positive. It can be a good thing that we do not have a European tournament because we can focus on the league. It is good for us as a team and as a squad because we get that time, one game a week, and I have a feeling we can do great things this year."
Alonso already making an impact
Sanchez also praised the influence of his new manager, revealing Alonso has quickly earned the trust of the Chelsea squad.
The goalkeeper believes the former Spain international has created a calm environment while gradually implementing his tactical ideas.
"We have a new manager, and we are still trying to understand his game plan and what he wants from us. He is not rushing anything. He is checking every game, every area we are doing, and we are slowly integrating new things."
Chelsea goalkeeper full of confidence
After facing criticism during his time at Stamford Bridge, Sanchez says Alonso has given him renewed confidence ahead of the new campaign.
The goalkeeper believes the Chelsea boss understands how to maximise his strengths.
"I feel amazing. Xabi has given me all the confidence in the world. He understands my strengths. He is going to allow me to do what I am best at this season."
Chelsea's pre-season concluded with a 3-3 draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim after a 3-0 victory over AC Milan, with Alonso rotating heavily across both fixtures as he assessed his squad.
