Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez believes consistency, communication and collective responsibility are driving the club’s defensive improvement this season, as the Blues prepare to face in-form Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

Sánchez has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League so far, keeping nine clean sheets in 17 league matches during the 2025/26 campaign. That tally leaves him joint-top of the division alongside Arsenal’s David Raya and just one short of the ten he managed across the entirety of last season.

The Spaniard’s form was recognised in November when he was named PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month, but he is quick to deflect individual praise.

‘We understand each other now’

According to Sánchez, Chelsea’s defensive solidity is built on cohesion rather than heroics.

“Me and the four at the back, whoever plays, have all got to a point where we understand each other,” he explained. “Our weaknesses, our strengths — and we play to help each other out to have the best performance possible.

“We have hit a point where we have become very consistent. There is always space to improve even more, which we know we can, but we are doing our best every game.”

That understanding has been vital in tight matches, where margins are slim. Sánchez stressed the importance of clean sheets not just as a defensive metric, but as a platform for results.

“We know if we keep a clean sheet that secures the team a point, and then the guys at the top will get us three,” he added. “Keeping clean sheets makes the work of the rest of the guys easier.”

Thriving in the festive schedule

Having moved to England from Spain at the age of 15, Sánchez is no stranger to the demands of the Premier League’s festive calendar. Chelsea now face a packed run of fixtures, with matches against Villa, Bournemouth, Manchester City and Fulham arriving in quick succession.

For Sánchez, managing recovery is as important as preparation.

“It’s a busy period, so it’s about having a lot of rest, managing yourself well, and having the squad to do the right rotations, which we have been doing,” he said. “Everybody has been getting their chance to play.

“When you’re home, spend time with family and enjoy it, but also make sure you’re managing yourself well and getting the right amount of rest.”

Breaking Villa’s winning run

Chelsea’s next challenge may be their toughest yet. Aston Villa arrive in west London on the back of ten consecutive wins in all competitions, making them one of the Premier League’s form sides.

Sánchez is under no illusions about the difficulty of the task, but believes Stamford Bridge must remain a fortress.

“They are a very good team — ten wins in a row — so of course we want to break their stride, especially at home,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to get points from us at home.

“We have trained well this week and we are going to go out there, give our best, try to get a clean sheet and win the game.”

Having followed Chelsea closely this season, their defensive structure has looked increasingly settled, even as personnel rotate. However, Villa’s attacking movement and confidence will provide a stern test of that progress.

What’s next?

Chelsea’s clash with Aston Villa marks the start of a demanding festive period that could shape their league position heading into the New Year. A clean sheet against one of the division’s most in-form sides would further validate the Blues’ defensive progress, while setting the tone for upcoming fixtures against Bournemouth, Manchester City and Fulham.

Can Chelsea’s defence maintain its standards and be the first to stop Aston Villa’s winning run?
