Manchester United are leading the race to sign Alejandro Balde, with agent Jorge Mendes reportedly working to facilitate the Barcelona left-back’s move to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

United have stepped up their search for a new left-back during the final days of the window, and Balde is increasingly looking like their most realistic option.

The 22-year-old is believed to be close to giving Michael Carrick’s side the green light after United made their move.

Manchester United move into pole position

Balde’s situation at Barcelona has changed quickly.

Jorge Mendes travelled to Barcelona last week for discussions involving his client and the Catalan club, before Hansi Flick left Balde out of the squad for Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Elche.

Manchester United are now described as the “most interested” Premier League club and the leading candidate for his signature.

United have considered alternatives, including Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Racing Santander youngster Jorge Salinas.

Newcastle, however, have made it clear they have no intention of selling Hall, strengthening the possibility of United focusing their efforts on Balde.

Jorge Mendes pushing Balde towards United

Sport reports that Mendes is playing a central role in negotiations.

The Portuguese agent is attempting to facilitate Balde’s switch to the Premier League, with Manchester United currently his most likely destination.

Barcelona could reportedly raise €50-60million from a sale, although other reports have placed Balde’s potential price considerably lower at around €30-40m.

Either way, selling Balde would give Barcelona additional funds to pursue Salinas, who has a €16m release clause at Racing Santander.

Mendes represents both players and is reportedly pushing for Balde's departure while simultaneously attempting to take Salinas to Barcelona.

Carrick could get another major signing

Balde would provide Carrick with a long-term option on the left side of defence and continue United's aggressive late-window recruitment.

At only 22, the Spain international also fits the profile of a player capable of becoming a major part of United's project for several seasons.

Most importantly, the player's position appears to be shifting towards the move.

Key Points

  • Manchester United are leading the race for Alejandro Balde.
  • Jorge Mendes is working to facilitate his Premier League transfer.
  • Balde is reportedly moving closer to accepting United's offer.
  • Barcelona could demand around €50-60m, although lower valuations have also been reported.
  • Lewis Hall is unlikely to leave Newcastle United.
  • Barcelona could use money from Balde's sale to pursue Jorge Salinas.

What’s Next?

The focus now turns to whether Manchester United and Barcelona can agree a transfer fee before the window closes.

With Mendes actively working on the deal, Balde moving closer to the exit and United leading the race, the conditions appear to be falling into place. The biggest remaining question is the price Barcelona will ultimately demand.

Would Alejandro Balde be the right long-term replacement for Luke Shaw at Manchester United?
