Richarlison blocks Everton return with defiant Tottenham transfer message

Richarlison has thrown his Tottenham Hotspur future back into uncertainty after publicly insisting that he will decide where he plays next, seemingly blocking a proposed return to Everton.

The Brazilian published a lengthy statement on Instagram after reports in England suggested Spurs had reached an agreement with Everton for his transfer.

However, Richarlison has made it clear that he will not accept a move simply because Tottenham want him to leave, while Everton have now switched their attention elsewhere.

Richarlison's message represents a significant escalation after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his position in Roberto De Zerbi's squad.

“After everything I've been through over the last few years, I've decided that they will never decide my future again,” Richarlison wrote.

The striker claimed previous decisions made by others had caused difficult experiences, referring to “pressure, threats, reprisals” before insisting none of those things would intimidate him.

Tottenham paid Everton £60million for Richarlison in 2022, but the club have been attempting to find a solution for his future during the closing stages of this summer's window.

The 29-year-old stressed that he has never been opposed to leaving Spurs entirely. Instead, any move must also suit him.

“I have always, at every opportunity, made it clear that me leaving for another club also had to be good for the club,” he added.

“I just don't want decisions to be made for me.”

The statement comes after British reports claimed Tottenham and Everton had reached an agreement over Richarlison's return to Goodison Park.

At the same time, Spurs were working to bring Iliman Ndiaye in the opposite direction.

Those moves now appear to have collapsed.

Everton have instead moved for Folarin Balogun from AS Monaco, agreeing a €45m deal plus another €5m in potential bonuses for the United States international.

That significantly reduces the likelihood of Everton returning for Richarlison before the deadline.

Tottenham have suffered another setback because Ndiaye is no longer expected to move to north London either.

The Everton attacker is instead set to join Manchester City, removing another potential piece from Spurs' Deadline Day plans.

Richarlison's position is particularly intriguing given De Zerbi's recent comments. The Tottenham manager had publicly revealed that the Brazilian was among the players who had expressed a desire to leave.

The forward's latest statement does not necessarily suggest he wants to remain at Tottenham long-term. Instead, it indicates that any departure will happen exclusively on terms he accepts.

With Everton moving for Balogun and Ndiaye heading towards Manchester City, the proposed solution now appears to have disappeared.

Unless another acceptable destination emerges before the deadline, Richarlison could remain at Tottenham despite De Zerbi previously confirming the striker had asked to leave.

Spurs must now decide whether another transfer can be arranged at short notice or reintegrate Richarlison into the squad until at least January.
