Ricardo Pepi has admitted that his failed move to Fulham was a difficult experience, but the PSV Eindhoven striker is now using the disappointment as motivation to improve.

The 23-year-old appeared close to securing a Premier League switch earlier this year after Fulham made repeated attempts to sign him. However, despite negotiations progressing as far as a medical in London, the transfer eventually collapsed.

Pepi has now responded by making an impressive start to the new season with PSV.

Fulham move collapsed after medical

Fulham initially pushed to sign Pepi during the January transfer window, submitting several significant offers for the United States international.

PSV refused to sell midway through the season, but Fulham returned the following month to discuss a summer transfer.

Those negotiations advanced considerably, with Pepi travelling to London for a medical. However, disagreements between the clubs over details of the transfer, including when the striker would officially become a Fulham player, ultimately prevented an agreement.

The collapse left Pepi frustrated, particularly as he was also dealing with injury problems at the time.

Pepi turns disappointment into motivation

Speaking to NOS, Pepi admitted the failed transfer affected both him and his family.

“That wasn’t an easy period,” Pepi said. “Not just for me, but for my family too. They’ve been there for me my whole life, and everyone was disappointed.”

Rather than allowing the setback to derail him, Pepi says he has turned it into motivation.

“Everything happens for a reason,” he added. “Ultimately, I used that as fuel to come back even stronger.”

That response is already producing results. Pepi has scored three goals in his opening six appearances of the season for PSV.

Premier League opportunity could return

Pepi's failed Fulham transfer does not necessarily mean his chances of playing in England are over.

At 23, the striker still has plenty of time to earn another opportunity. Maintaining his current goalscoring form at PSV could quickly attract fresh Premier League interest.

For now, however, Pepi's attention is on turning one of the most disappointing periods of his career into a positive chapter in Eindhoven.
