Regis Le Bris keeps distance from Granit Xhaka investigation

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has refused to be drawn into the investigation surrounding Granit Xhaka, insisting his focus remains solely on the midfielder’s football.

Xhaka has withdrawn from the Switzerland squad for the international break amid allegations concerning a Covid-19 vaccination certificate obtained during the pandemic.

The veteran midfielder has acknowledged making a mistake and says he will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities as the matter is investigated.

Le Bris was questioned about the situation following Sunderland’s 5-3 Premier League defeat against Manchester City.

The Frenchman offered a short response and made clear he would not comment on matters outside football.

“It is not my area to speak about those problems or situations,” Le Bris said. “My area is football. About football, he is really good.”

The Lucerne public prosecutor’s office is investigating whether Xhaka received the Covid vaccination associated with the certificate or obtained the documentation without being vaccinated.

At the time, Switzerland did not have a general requirement to possess a vaccination certificate, although certificates were required for access to certain venues, activities and travel.

The Swiss Football Association confirmed Xhaka has withdrawn from the national-team camp, with his international future set to be discussed after the break.

Xhaka also released a statement addressing the controversy.

He explained that he had serious concerns about Covid vaccination at the time and said fear and uncertainty influenced his decision-making.

“In this turbulent emotional state, I obtained a vaccination certificate instead of clarifying my open questions through the proper channels,” Xhaka said. “Today, I clearly see that this was the wrong course of action. It was a mistake. I am sorry.”

The midfielder added that he takes responsibility for his decision and is cooperating with the investigation.

For Sunderland, Le Bris is keeping a clear separation between the ongoing legal matter and Xhaka’s role as a footballer while the authorities establish the facts.

Xhaka is expected to cooperate with the relevant authorities during the international break while the investigation continues.

The Swiss Football Association has said his future with the national team will be discussed after the international window, while Sunderland will await developments before returning to club action.
