Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has ruled out making a panic signing in January despite captain Reece James facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines following knee surgery.
James suffered the injury during training before Chelsea's 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth last weekend.
The England international is reportedly facing approximately three months out and could miss as many as 22 matches, although Alonso has declined to confirm an exact return date.
Alonso rules out panic buying after James injury
Speaking on Friday, Alonso confirmed that James had undergone successful surgery but acknowledged the disappointment of losing his captain.
"We are all disappointed, especially for him," Alonso said.
"We wanted to wait to know the result of the tests, but the surgery has been successful."
Despite the significant setback, the Chelsea boss believes his existing squad has enough depth to manage without an emergency January addition.
"After Christmas, time will tell. Things must be done properly. Get that knee in the best possible condition," he explained.
"It is a disappointment for everyone, for him, but we have the squad to deal with it."
James is not expected back until late January at the earliest, although his recovery will determine when he can resume playing.
Colwill and Caicedo to share Chelsea captaincy
With James unavailable, Alonso confirmed that Levi Colwill and Moises Caicedo will take on additional leadership responsibilities.
"We have Moi, we have Levi, we have players that take that responsibility," the Spaniard said.
"They take the role in a perfect way. They have the support from the rest."
Alonso also stressed that James remains an influential figure at Stamford Bridge despite his injury problems.
"He is still a very important player and he is the captain, he has great influence," he added.
The defender will continue working closely with Chelsea's medical staff while remaining involved around the first-team squad.
