Real Madrid left regretting Pedro Porro decision after Tottenham renewal

Real Madrid are reportedly regretting their decision not to make a serious move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Pedro Porro before he committed his long-term future to the North London club.

The Spain international has become one of Europe's leading right-backs since joining Spurs from Sporting CP in 2023, and his impressive World Cup performances have only strengthened the belief inside the Santiago Bernabéu that an opportunity has slipped away.

Tottenham tied Porro down to a new contract until 2031, with the option of a further year, before the World Cup began.

The timing proved significant, as Spurs were aware of growing interest from both Real Madrid and Manchester City and wanted to remove any uncertainty surrounding one of their most valuable players.

That decision has paid off, with Porro enjoying another outstanding tournament for Spain, including scoring in their 2-0 World Cup semi-final victory over France.

According to reports in Spain, members of Real Madrid's hierarchy and José Mourinho's coaching staff now believe the club should have pushed harder to sign the 26-year-old.

The report claims Porro could have been available for around €50 million before signing his new contract, but Real instead prioritised a move for Denzel Dumfries, who arrived for a reported fee of around €20 million.

Los Blancos see Trent Alexander-Arnold as their long-term first-choice right-back, with Dumfries providing competition, leading the club to abandon any serious pursuit of the Tottenham defender.

Porro has previously admitted that playing for Real Madrid would represent a dream move.

Reports suggest the Spanish defender would have been receptive to an approach before extending his contract, although he remains happy at Tottenham and fully committed to the Premier League club.

With his new long-term deal now in place, any future move would be considerably more complicated, but some in Spain believe the possibility cannot be ruled out later in his career if circumstances change.

For now, Tottenham hold all the cards, with one of Europe's best attacking full-backs firmly at the centre of their long-term plans.
