Pape Matar Sarr is beginning to make his mark at Juventus following his summer loan move from Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Luciano Spalletti increasingly convinced by the midfielder.

Sarr left Spurs after Roberto De Zerbi publicly revealed the Senegal international wanted a new challenge. Juventus then moved quickly, bringing the 24-year-old to Turin on an initial loan deal.

His start in Italy has been disrupted by a muscle injury, limiting him to three appearances across all competitions. However, with Sarr now back to fitness, the mood surrounding him is becoming increasingly positive.

Juventus convinced by Sarr

According to Tuttosport, Juventus originally turned to Sarr after missing out on Franck Kessie.

Club officials studied footage of the midfielder from his final season at Tottenham and were convinced his qualities could strengthen Spalletti’s squad.

That belief has only increased since his arrival, with Sarr now described as a player of “absolute value”.

Spalletti has also been impressed by the midfielder’s combination of athleticism and technical ability.

“He’s a complete player,” Spalletti said. “He has this ease of running and you find him everywhere, precise and punctual.”

The Juventus boss also highlighted Sarr’s stamina, tackling, technical quality and ability to arrive in dangerous areas.

“We’re convinced we have a strong player at our disposal,” he added.

Injuries open door for Tottenham loanee

Sarr subsequently impressed against NEC Nijmegen and Atalanta, strengthening his case for a bigger role.

He is now expected to start against Cagliari this weekend after also performing well during the international break.

Juventus’ midfield injury problems could prove particularly important.

Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram are both expected to remain unavailable until 2027, potentially giving Sarr an extended opportunity to establish himself in Spalletti’s starting XI.

For a player whose progress at Tottenham was repeatedly interrupted by injuries, the coming months could therefore prove decisive.

Permanent Juventus move possible

Regular football would not only give Sarr the opportunity to rebuild momentum but could also strengthen his chances of remaining at Juventus beyond his initial loan.

Champions League qualification could further improve the possibility of the Bianconeri keeping him permanently.

For now, Sarr has moved beyond simply recovering from injury. He is beginning to convince Juventus that they may have found a midfielder capable of playing an important role this season.

Key Points

  • Pape Matar Sarr joined Juventus from Tottenham on an initial loan deal in the summer.
  • A muscle injury initially restricted the midfielder to three appearances.
  • Luciano Spalletti has praised Sarr as a “complete player” with stamina, technical quality and strong tackling ability.
  • Injuries to Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram could hand Sarr significantly more playing time.
  • A strong run could improve his chances of securing a permanent move to Juventus.

What’s Next?

Sarr is expected to be handed an opportunity to start against Cagliari as Juventus deal with their midfield injury crisis.

With Locatelli and Thuram unavailable until 2027, the Tottenham loanee now has a significant window to prove he deserves a regular place in Spalletti’s team.

If he takes that opportunity, discussions over turning his loan into a permanent transfer could become increasingly relevant over the coming months.
