Oscar Tottenham snub has resurfaced after the Brazilian midfielder opened up about the decision that defined his Premier League career. Speaking on John Obi Mikel’s Obi One podcast, the 34-year-old explained how then-Spurs boss André Villas-Boas attempted to lure him to North London before Chelsea swooped with a £25 million offer from Internacional.
In Oscar’s own words, the decision was never really in doubt. “No, I had Tottenham as well, because André Villas-Boas was there. Yes, Villas-Boas was the first one to call me. Wow. I had played with Villas-Boas in China, and he always said, ‘I talked to you, why don’t you come?’ But, you know, Chelsea… I cannot compare. Chelsea is better, so I chose Chelsea. And it was the right choice, because I played good football there, we won some titles that year. So it was amazing,” he said.
Chelsea glory over Spurs rebuild
Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea offered a clear platform for trophies and elite competition. In contrast, Villas-Boas’ Spurs project was short-lived, lasting only 18 months before his dismissal. Tottenham attempted a rebuild following Gareth Bale’s record-breaking move to Real Madrid, eventually signing Christian Eriksen to lead their midfield. Had Oscar chosen differently, North London might have looked very different.
Oscar, meanwhile, delivered two Premier League titles, a League Cup and a Europa League trophy during five successful years in West London. His decision sits comfortably alongside Chelsea’s later hijack of Willian from Spurs, which remains one of the most infamous transfer tussles in English football.
Spectacular goals and standout moments
Oscar was never the most prolific attacking midfielder, but his ability to deliver spectacular strikes endeared him to the Chelsea faithful. Across 203 appearances in all competitions, he scored 38 goals — several of which live long in club folklore.
His debut double against Juventus in the Champions League, including a stunning long-range curler past Gianluigi Buffon, earned him Chelsea’s Goal of the Season award in 2012. He would win the accolade again in 2015 with a brilliant outside-of-the-boot finish against Queens Park Rangers en route to his first Premier League crown.
Analyst verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William observed: “Oscar’s choice to join Chelsea over Spurs was decisive. While Tottenham were in flux, Chelsea’s stability and winning culture gave him the chance to develop and collect honours. Even his critics admit his flair and knack for spectacular goals brought Stamford Bridge unforgettable moments.”
He added: “Looking back, his regret-free stance makes sense. Villas-Boas’ Spurs didn’t survive long enough for Oscar to thrive, but Chelsea gave him silverware and a platform to shine in Europe.”
