Brighton defender Oliver Boscagli has credited James Milner's advice and regular conversations with Fabian Hürzeler for helping him turn around his career at the Amex Stadium.
The Frenchman endured a frustrating first season after joining Brighton on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven in July 2025, with an early injury disrupting his preparations.
However, the 28-year-old has established himself in Hürzeler's starting line-up this season, adapting to a new role at left-back as Brighton have climbed towards the top of the Premier League table.
Boscagli explains how he won Hürzeler's trust
Speaking to L'Equipe, Boscagli revealed that improved fitness and persistent communication with his manager were crucial to his breakthrough.
“First of all, this year I played in all the preseason matches, unlike last year when I got injured after only five or six days of training,” he explained.
The defender also completed 20 days of additional fitness work before returning to Brighton for pre-season.
After struggling for opportunities last term, Boscagli admitted he had considered his future but remained convinced he could succeed in England.
“I knew I could establish myself here. I also spoke a lot with the coach (Fabian Hürzeler) last season. I kept asking him where he stood regarding me.”
James Milner's advice changed his approach
Boscagli also revealed how an hour-long conversation with veteran midfielder James Milner helped him deal with the frustration of being overlooked.
“He could see I was getting impatient,” Boscagli recalled.
Milner encouraged him to focus on proving himself in training rather than blaming the manager.
“Either you complain and blame the manager, or you show him in training that you’re the best and things will eventually turn around.”
Boscagli added: “And that’s what happened.”
The Frenchman was equally impressed by Milner's commitment away from matches, describing how the experienced midfielder would already be working in the gym when he arrived early for training.
That professionalism helped Boscagli maintain his standards during a difficult period.
Brighton defender rewarded for patience
Boscagli's improved fitness and determination have now helped him secure regular minutes, even in an unfamiliar position.
His resurgence also comes as he receives recognition from the French national team.
After a challenging introduction to English football, the defender's decision to stay patient and fight for his place appears to be paying off.
