Nottingham Forest could be handed another opportunity to sign Fiorentina right-back Dodo after failing with a move during the summer transfer window.

Forest pushed to sign the Brazilian and, at one stage, a transfer appeared to be getting closer. Fiorentina ultimately rejected their offer because they wanted a higher fee.

The situation has now changed following a difficult start to the season and another managerial change in Florence.

Dodo could get Fiorentina lifeline under Vanoli

Dodo struggled during Fiorentina’s 4-0 opening defeat against Roma and was subsequently left out of their next two matches.

Fabio Grosso has now been sacked, with Paolo Vanoli returning as manager.

According to FirenzeViola, that could provide Dodo with an opportunity to rebuild his position at the club. Vanoli regularly used the right-back during the second half of last season and could make him an important player again.

However, that does not necessarily mean his long-term future is at Fiorentina.

Forest and Olympiacos both had offers rejected during the summer, while Fiorentina are yet to make a definitive decision over what happens next.

Forest could have stronger transfer position

The major issue for Fiorentina is Dodo’s contract, which expires in 2027.

Unless a renewal is agreed, the Brazilian will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.

That could put Nottingham Forest in a significantly stronger position than they were during the summer.

Instead of meeting Fiorentina’s asking price, Forest could potentially negotiate directly with Dodo over a free transfer for next season.

His performances under Vanoli could still change the situation. A successful return to the team may convince Fiorentina to push harder for a renewal, but without a new contract, Forest have every reason to continue monitoring him.

Key Points

  • Nottingham Forest had an offer for Dodo rejected by Fiorentina during the summer.
  • Paolo Vanoli’s return could give the Brazilian a fresh opportunity after losing his place.
  • Dodo’s Fiorentina contract expires in 2027 and his long-term future remains unresolved.
  • Forest could potentially negotiate a pre-contract agreement with him from January.

What’s Next?

Dodo now has an opportunity to re-establish himself under Vanoli. Forest will likely keep a close eye on both his performances and contract situation, with January potentially providing a much more favourable route to securing his signature.
