Leeds United forward Noah Okafor appears to have found himself in Switzerland coach Murat Yakin's firing line once again after a costly mistake almost created problems during the 2-0 World Cup win over Algeria.

Switzerland secured their place in the last 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup, but Yakin was far from satisfied with the closing stages of the victory.

The coach completely lost his temper on the touchline after Okafor cheaply surrendered possession, smashing a water bottle into the ground as his frustration boiled over.

Yakin furious after Okafor loses possession

According to Blick, Yakin briefly lost his cool before completely losing his temper in added time.

Four minutes into the six minutes of stoppage time, Okafor gave the ball away unnecessarily. The mistake allowed Algeria another opportunity to attack and immediately provoked a furious reaction from the Switzerland manager.

When asked about the incident after the match, Yakin made clear that his frustration was directed at his team's poor use of the ball.

"It's not the bottle's fault.

"I wasn't happy with our defensive organisation in the last ten minutes. We gave the ball away far too easily, at times when it wasn't necessary. That gave our opponents chances again."

Although Yakin did not directly name Okafor, the Leeds forward's mistake immediately preceded the outburst and the comments were a clear warning about the type of errors the coach will not tolerate.

Another water bottle pays the price

This was not the first time Yakin has taken his frustration out on a water bottle during the tournament.

A similar incident occurred when Switzerland conceded a late equaliser against Qatar in the group stage.

The manager was able to joke about his latest outburst after Switzerland completed the victory.

"Perhaps throwing a bottle has become a habit. But as long as we're winning, I'll happily throw another bottle."

The lighter tone after the match should not disguise Yakin's frustration with the way Switzerland finished the game.

With knockout football now beginning, unnecessary mistakes in possession could prove far more damaging.

Old tensions between Yakin and Okafor

The incident is particularly notable because of the difficult history between Yakin and Okafor.

The Leeds forward has previously fallen out with the Switzerland manager and spent time outside the national-team setup following disagreements between the pair.

That makes every mistake potentially more significant as Okafor attempts to rebuild his position in the squad.

The forward cannot point to tiredness as an explanation for his error against Algeria. He spent the entire group stage on the bench and was only introduced for the final 19 minutes with Switzerland already in control.

His limited involvement also means every opportunity is important.

A strong substitute appearance could have improved his chances of earning more minutes in the knockout rounds. Instead, his late mistake drew another public display of frustration from Yakin.

Okafor still fighting for World Cup minutes

Fortunately for Okafor, the loss of possession did not lead to an Algeria goal.

Switzerland protected their 2-0 advantage and progressed safely to the last 16, allowing Yakin to laugh about his touchline reaction afterwards.

Had the mistake changed the result, the consequences for Okafor could have been considerably more serious.

The Leeds player now faces another battle to convince Yakin he can be trusted in the knockout stages. After spending the group phase as a substitute, he needs to make the most of any further opportunities he receives.

For a player with a complicated history with the national-team coach, another moment of frustration is unlikely to help.

What’s next?

Switzerland will now prepare for the World Cup last 16 after securing their fourth consecutive appearance in the knockout stages.

Okafor will hope his late mistake against Algeria does not cost him further opportunities, while Yakin will demand greater control from his players when protecting leads.

The incident may have ended with a smile, but the message from the Switzerland coach was clear: careless mistakes will not be accepted as the pressure increases.

Should Noah Okafor be given more opportunities for Switzerland, or was Murat Yakin right to be furious with his late mistake?
