The Newcastle United summer transfers 2025 saga is finally catching pace.

After months of patience, Eddie Howe’s transfer wishlist — which has been active since 2024 — is being realised. An improved offer has gone in for Anthony Elanga, talks continue for James Trafford, and elite-level centre-backs like Giorgio Scalvini are being explored.

With pre-season kicking off next week, Newcastle’s long-awaited triple transfer plan is reaching the critical stage.

Elanga, Again: Howe Still Wants His Man

Anthony Elanga remains a top priority.

Newcastle tried to sign the Swedish winger on deadline day last summer with a bold £45m bid. That was rejected. But 12 months later, with Forest now more open to negotiation, the Magpies have returned with an improved offer.

“We’ve admired him for a long time – this club has needed a true right winger for years,” a club source told ChronicleLive. — Club Insider

Elanga’s versatility and work rate would make him a strong addition, especially as Newcastle haven’t signed a specialist right-winger since Miguel Almirón in 2019.

Goalkeeper Target: James Trafford Talks Ongoing

Howe is also determined to bring in a new goalkeeper — and James Trafford is still in focus.

Newcastle first tried to land him last summer from Burnley. The interest never cooled. While a deal remains tricky, Newcastle believe the 21-year-old could push Nick Pope for the No.1 jersey over time.

Scalvini or Thiaw to Partner Botman?

With Marc Guehi no longer on the radar, Newcastle are looking at Serie A for a long-term defensive partner to Sven Botman.

Giorgio Scalvini (Atalanta) and Malick Thiaw (AC Milan) are the two names high on the shortlist. Both would demand serious negotiation, but Newcastle believe they need Champions League-level depth to compete across four competitions.

Player Club Position Status
Anthony Elanga Nottingham Forest Right Winger Bid Improved
James Trafford Burnley Goalkeeper Talks Ongoing
Giorgio Scalvini Atalanta Centre-Back Shortlist

Analyst Verdict

Newcastle are finally acting on a blueprint Howe drew up 12 months ago. Elanga is key to solving the long-running right-wing gap. Trafford fits their goalkeeper succession plan. And Scalvini is exactly the profile needed to upgrade the defence.

With Champions League qualification back in reach, Newcastle can't afford another quiet summer.

Newcastle is doing good business in the transfer market even tough they lost on Joao Pedro
