Newcastle United could welcome several important players back after the international break as Matthias Jaissle prepares his side for Monday’s Premier League trip to Coventry City.

The Magpies have made a solid start under Jaissle despite the new head coach being unable to field what would arguably be his strongest XI.

Joelinton and captain Dan Burn are yet to play competitively this season, while Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Will Osula and others have also spent time on the sidelines.

However, Newcastle’s injury situation is finally beginning to improve.

Joelinton and Gonzalez ready to return

One of the biggest boosts concerns Joelinton.

The Brazilian has missed the entire campaign with a thigh injury but is now back in training and is expected to be available against Coventry.

Nico Gonzalez should also return after missing the victory over Hull City following a concussion suffered against Leeds United. The summer signing has now cleared concussion protocol.

Lewis Miley returned early from England Under-21 duty after suffering a training knock, but the midfielder is also expected to be available.

Tino Livramento could potentially join them. The defender withdrew from England duty after experiencing discomfort, although Jaissle has expressed optimism over his condition.

Burn closing in on comeback

Newcastle captain Burn is also back in training following the ankle injury which has prevented him from featuring during the opening two months.

The Coventry game may come slightly too soon, with the home clash against Aston Villa on October 17 currently viewed as a more likely return date.

Amar Dedic is targeting the same fixture after suffering a minor hamstring problem.

Ramsey and Osula are further behind in their recoveries and are currently expected back around Newcastle’s trip to Everton on October 29.

Elanga facing longer wait

Elanga has missed Newcastle’s previous two league matches with a hamstring injury and is currently expected to return against Fulham on November 7.

There is less certainty surrounding goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.

The French youngster had recovered from an ankle problem and featured for France Under-21s, but has subsequently suffered a hamstring injury and will require further assessment.

For Jaissle, though, the overall picture is improving at an important time as Newcastle prepare to resume their Premier League campaign.

Key Points

  • Joelinton is back in training and expected to be available against Coventry.
  • Nico Gonzalez has cleared concussion protocol and can return on Monday.
  • Dan Burn is training again but October 17 against Aston Villa is considered a more likely comeback date.
  • Lewis Miley should be available despite returning early from England Under-21 duty.
  • Elanga, Ramsey and Osula are expected to require more time before returning.

What’s Next?

Newcastle travel to Coventry on October 12 before facing Aston Villa five days later.

Jaissle could have Gonzalez, Joelinton and Miley available immediately, while Livramento also has a chance of returning.

Burn and Dedic should then strengthen the squad further against Villa, giving Jaissle significantly more options as Newcastle enter the next stage of the season.
