Newcastle reject second £15m Forest bid for Jacob Murphy after Jaissle intervention

Newcastle United have rejected a second offer from Nottingham Forest for Jacob Murphy, with Matthias Jaissle making it clear he values the experienced winger's influence at St James' Park.

Forest have returned with a £15million bid for the 31-year-old after previously making an approach during the closing stages of the transfer window.

Newcastle's decision may appear surprising given Murphy is entering the final year of his contract, but Jaissle believes his importance extends beyond his potential transfer value.

Nottingham Forest have been pushing to add Murphy to Oliver Glasner's squad before the transfer deadline and have now tested Newcastle's resolve twice.

Their latest proposal reached £15m but was rejected by the Magpies.

From a purely financial perspective, Newcastle have a decision to make.

Murphy is 31 and has less than a year remaining on his current contract, meaning his value could decline considerably if an extension is not agreed.

A £15m offer therefore represents a significant sum for a player Newcastle could otherwise risk losing for considerably less further down the line.

Jaissle, however, has quickly developed a different view of Murphy's importance.

The Newcastle manager has inherited a squad undergoing significant change following a busy summer at St James' Park.

Several established players have departed, including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while Newcastle have brought in a collection of younger players.

That turnover has increased the importance of experienced figures inside the dressing room.

Murphy has emerged as one of those players for Jaissle, who is understood to value both his personality and his influence on younger teammates.

The winger also remains capable of contributing on the pitch. He produced an outstanding 2024/25 campaign with 23 goals and assists across 41 appearances, even if his influence declined last season.

Murphy has not started either of Newcastle's opening Premier League matches this season, with Anthony Elanga providing strong competition on the right.

However, selling him now would remove another senior figure from a squad already experiencing considerable transition.

That creates a dilemma for Newcastle's hierarchy.

Accepting £15m for a 31-year-old entering the final year of his contract would make financial sense, particularly when he is no longer guaranteed a starting position.

Going against the wishes of a newly appointed manager carries its own risk.

If Jaissle has explicitly communicated that Murphy remains important to his squad, Newcastle must weigh the immediate financial return against the sporting and dressing-room consequences of sanctioning a late departure.

For now, their answer to Forest remains no.

Forest must decide whether to return with an improved third proposal or move on to another target before the deadline.

Newcastle's position will also be worth watching. Rejecting £15m suggests Jaissle's sporting assessment currently carries significant weight, but another increased offer would make an already difficult decision even more complicated.
