Nazariy Rusyn has refused to rule out remaining at Sunderland next season, despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future at the Stadium of Light.

The Ukrainian forward is due to return to the club following the end of his loan spell at Polish side Arka Gdynia, where he scored four goals across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign.

With reports in Ukraine linking him with a move to FC Karpaty Lviv, Rusyn has now addressed the speculation and confirmed discussions are taking place between his representatives and Sunderland.

Rusyn focused on Sunderland return

Speaking to Ukrainian outlet UKR Football, the 26-year-old explained that no decision has yet been made regarding his next move.

When asked about reported interest from Karpaty Lviv, the striker admitted he was unaware of any concrete developments and insisted his immediate focus is on returning to England.

"Nothing is yet known. My agent is in talks with Sunderland. I don't have any specific information yet. I only know that I have to be in Sunderland on July 4th, because that's when our training camp starts. So, I'm flying to England on July 1st."

Rusyn also revealed he has not spoken directly with Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris about his role ahead of the new season.

Sunderland stay remains possible

Despite spending much of the last 18 months away from Wearside on loan, the attacker has not ruled out remaining with the Black Cats.

Asked whether staying at Sunderland was a realistic possibility, Rusyn offered a straightforward response.

"Yes, of course. I'm not ruling that out."

The forward still has one year remaining on his current contract, meaning Sunderland must soon decide whether he has a role to play under Le Bris or whether a permanent transfer represents the best solution for all parties.

Rusyn joined the club from Zorya Luhansk in September 2023 and has made 32 appearances for Sunderland. However, regular first-team opportunities have been difficult to secure, leading to loan spells at Hajduk Split and Arka Gdynia.

Contract situation creates decision for Sunderland

With only 12 months remaining on his deal, this summer may represent Sunderland's final opportunity to receive a transfer fee for the player.

The Black Cats are expected to assess Rusyn during pre-season before making a final decision on his future. His return to the club's training camp could provide the clearest indication yet of whether he remains part of Le Bris' plans.

Interest from abroad may also develop further once discussions between the player, his agent and Sunderland progress.

With his contract entering its final year, clarity is expected sooner rather than later as Sunderland weigh up the benefits of keeping the striker against the possibility of securing a transfer fee this summer.

Should Sunderland give Nazariy Rusyn another chance next season, or is this the right time for the club to cash in on the forward?
