Why Chelsea paid £117m for Morgan Rogers after beating Arsenal to his signature

Chelsea have made one of the biggest statements of the summer transfer window by agreeing a British record £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers, beating Arsenal to the England international after months of interest.

The 24-year-old arrives as one of England's most complete attacking players, bringing versatility, creativity and Premier League experience to Alonso's evolving side.

Arsenal had identified Rogers as their preferred attacking reinforcement after another outstanding campaign with Aston Villa.

However, Chelsea acted decisively in negotiations and were able to convince both Villa and the player to complete the move.

One of Rogers' biggest strengths is his versatility.

Although naturally suited to playing as a No.10, he is equally comfortable operating from either wing or in a more advanced No.8 role within midfield.

That tactical flexibility gives Alonso numerous options depending on the formation he ultimately adopts.

Whether Chelsea line up in a 3-4-3, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Rogers possesses the qualities to influence games through his movement, work rate and ability to attack defenders both with and without possession.

His willingness to make intelligent runs also complements creative players such as Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, while offering another solution against teams that defend deep.

Over the last two Premier League seasons, Rogers has developed into one of England's most productive attacking players.
