Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo has insisted the Blues will respond positively to their 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, vowing to finish 2025 on a high when they return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Chelsea controlled large spells of their penultimate Premier League fixture of the year and led through João Pedro’s first-half goal from a Reece James corner. However, a second-half turnaround from an in-form Aston Villa side saw the visitors score twice in 20 minutes, leaving Chelsea frustrated and empty-handed.

‘It’s painful because we were controlling the game’

Speaking after the match, Caicedo admitted the result hurt — particularly given Chelsea’s dominance for much of the contest.

“It’s painful because we were controlling the game,” said Moisés Caicedo. “The first half was so good and we started the second half well and could have won, even after the first goal they scored.

“For sure we were frustrated because we were doing a great job, but when you do not concentrate for the whole game in the Premier League, it’s going to happen.”

The Ecuadorian’s comments echoed a recurring theme in Chelsea’s recent performances: strong spells undone by lapses in concentration.

Turning frustration into fuel

Despite the disappointment, Caicedo was quick to frame the defeat as a learning opportunity rather than a setback.

“We need to keep learning from this because we were there, up,” he said. “But in the Premier League you need to be consistent to stay up.

“So we need to keep learning. This is not just a loss, it’s a chance to learn, and for sure we’re going to come back even stronger.”

Having followed Chelsea closely this season, that message aligns with Enzo Maresca’s emphasis on growth and resilience during a campaign that has promised much but delivered inconsistently.

Bournemouth clash offers immediate response

Chelsea will not have to wait long to put those lessons into practice. They host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 30 December, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm.

Caicedo is determined to use that fixture as a statement of intent.

“It’s important for us, for the fans, to end the year in a good way,” he added. “So we’re just going to learn from this and focus on the next game because we want to give everything.”

With Chelsea sitting fifth in the table and under pressure to maintain momentum, the Bournemouth match already carries added significance.

Caicedo’s performance in numbers

Despite the result, Caicedo delivered a solid individual display against Villa, underlining his importance in midfield.

Caicedo vs Aston Villa – key stats:

Minutes played 90
Accurate passes 62 / 66 (94%)
Key passes 1
Recoveries 10
Ground duels 9
Ground duels won 2

His ball retention and defensive work were central to Chelsea’s first-half control, even if the team ultimately failed to convert that dominance into points.

What’s next?

Chelsea’s challenge now is translating encouraging performances into results. Caicedo’s insistence on learning — rather than dwelling — will be crucial as fixtures continue to come thick and fast.

Ending the year with a home win would not only lift spirits but also reaffirm belief in Maresca’s project heading into 2026.

Can Chelsea turn frustration into focus against Bournemouth — and show they really are ready to “come back even stronger”?
