Arsenal’s dreams of progressing to the Champions League final were dashed after a 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, sealing a 3-1 aggregate defeat in the semi-finals. Despite the crushing result, manager Mikel Arteta remained defiant in his post-match interview, claiming that Arsenal had been the best team in this year’s competition.
Arsenal’s Performance in the Semi-Final: What Went Wrong?
The match started in a promising fashion for Arsenal, with Bukayo Saka showing great intent. However, Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi scored for PSG, putting the French giants in control. Despite Arsenal’s best efforts, including a late strike from Saka, a pivotal miss saw their hopes quickly fade away.
In his interview with TNT Sports, Arteta couldn’t hide his frustration. He began by acknowledging PSG’s triumph:
“First, congratulations to PSG for reaching the final. The assessment I will make when I am a little cooler,” Arteta remarked. However, he quickly turned his focus to the performance of his side, expressing disappointment with the result despite what he saw as a dominant performance.
Arteta continued to reflect on the key moments in the match, including PSG’s goalkeeper’s role in their victory. He noted how the goalkeeper had been the standout player across both legs of the semi-final, claiming that the keeper had made the difference in the tie. He also acknowledged Arsenal’s missed opportunities, particularly Saka’s miss in the dying moments, which Arteta believed could have changed the course of the tie.
“After 20 minutes, it should have been 3-0,” Arteta said, referring to the early missed chances. He pointed to lack of luck, claiming that sometimes it’s the “extra” that you need in the competition, and Arsenal simply didn’t have that on the night. — Mikel Arteta
“We were very close, and for long periods of both games, we were much better than them, but we are not there and that has to hurt,” Arteta added.
Mikel Arteta: Arsenal’s Progress Despite Trophy-less Season
Even in defeat, Arteta remained focused on the progress Arsenal has made this season, acknowledging that his side has shown significant improvement. “100 percent [there has been progression]. I don’t think there’s been a better team [than Arsenal] in the competition from what I have seen,” Arteta stated.
For Arteta, it’s clear that Arsenal’s rise is a sign of future promise, even though they ended the season without silverware.
Arteta was full of praise for his players, especially considering the numerous injuries they’ve had to endure this season. He mentioned that despite the injury crisis, Arsenal had shown resilience throughout the competition. “To come here with a different context and still do that, it gives me a lot of positives for the future,” Arteta said. “But tonight, I am very upset.”

Mikel, Mikel, Mikel PSG were the better team? I haven't seen anything where I thought Arsenal should have deserved it more than them.
