Mikel Arteta agrees new Arsenal contract after Premier League title success

Mikel Arteta has reached an agreement to extend his stay at Arsenal, ending uncertainty surrounding the manager’s future beyond the current season.

The 44-year-old’s existing contract expires at the end of the campaign, but the BBC reports that Arsenal and Arteta have now reached an agreement following months of negotiations.

The length of his new contract has not yet been revealed, although an official announcement is reportedly expected soon.

Keeping Arteta was considered a major priority for the Arsenal hierarchy following the club’s continued progress under the Spaniard.

Arteta took charge in December 2019 and initially had to oversee a difficult rebuilding process. Arsenal have since returned to challenging for major honours, culminating in last season’s Premier League triumph.

The Gunners ended a 22-year wait for the league title and also reached the Champions League final, where they were eventually beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Those achievements have strengthened Arteta’s position at the Emirates and convinced Arsenal to secure his future before his existing deal entered its final months.

The new agreement will reportedly also include a substantial improvement to Arteta’s salary.

His existing package is said to be worth approximately €11.5million per year, with more than €6m potentially available through bonuses. Arsenal are now prepared to increase those terms as recognition for the club’s recent success.

Arteta has taken charge of around 360 Arsenal matches since replacing Unai Emery and has overseen a significant transformation of the club.

His trophy collection currently includes the Premier League, FA Cup and three Community Shields.

With an agreement now reportedly in place, Arsenal can remove one potentially significant distraction and continue building around the manager who delivered their long-awaited return to the top of English football.

Arsenal are expected to formally announce Arteta’s extension once the remaining contractual process has been completed.

The agreement allows the club to turn its attention back towards defending the Premier League title, with Arteta now set to remain at the centre of Arsenal’s long-term project.
