Mike Penders focused on Chelsea breakthrough despite uncertainty over future

Mike Penders has made it clear that his immediate focus is earning a place at Chelsea, although the highly-rated goalkeeper has refused to completely rule out another move away from Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old arrives at a crucial stage of his development after an impressive loan spell with Strasbourg and an unexpected call-up to Belgium's World Cup squad.

While questions continue to surround his long-term future, Penders insists his priority remains proving himself to Chelsea's coaching staff during pre-season.

Penders admitted he was surprised when Belgium manager Rudi Garcia included him in the final squad for the World Cup.

"Did I know beforehand? No, not at all," Penders said.

"When the national coach called out my name, I did cheer for a moment."

"Because the competition from fellow goalkeepers was really tough. They all had an incredible season."

Despite ongoing speculation about another loan move, Penders insists his focus is firmly on establishing himself at Chelsea.

The Belgian expects to report for pre-season after completing his World Cup commitments and intends to fight for his place.

"I am starting pre-season at Chelsea and will try to prove myself in training," he explained.

"Hopefully, I stay injury-free and can prove myself."

Those comments underline the confidence he has gained following a successful campaign in France.

Having followed Chelsea's recent strategy with young goalkeepers, the club have often preferred gradual development pathways before handing players major first-team responsibilities. Penders appears determined to challenge that process if given the opportunity.

While Chelsea remains his preferred destination, the goalkeeper stopped short of guaranteeing he will stay.

"Anything is possible, but I am starting at Chelsea and will do my utmost to achieve my goal."

"Am I ready for it? Definitely."

The response leaves the possibility open for another loan or even an alternative arrangement should Chelsea decide regular playing time would benefit his development.

For now, however, the player is focused solely on the World Cup.

"First I want to focus entirely on this World Cup. After that, we'll see."
