Michael Carrick’s attacking plan could revive Man United stars after Amorim exit

Manchester United have turned the page following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with interim head coach Michael Carrick outlining a clear promise: positive, attacking football for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Carrick has been placed in charge until the end of the campaign, overseeing 17 matches as United attempt to force their way back into the Champions League places. His appointment represents a clear stylistic shift after 14 months of a more controlled and conservative approach under Amorim.

Carrick said taking charge at Old Trafford was an honour and stressed his belief in the current squad, explaining that his focus is on helping the players reach the standards expected at the club. He added that there is still a great deal to fight for this season and that the group is capable of delivering performances worthy of the supporters.

One of the most immediate changes under Carrick is expected to be structural. Amorim’s preference for a back three often left United passive in possession and limited between the lines. Carrick is widely expected to return to a 4-2-3-1 system, a shape far more aligned with United’s traditional attacking identity.

The philosophy draws heavily from principles established during the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, prioritising front-foot football, positional freedom and aggressive ball progression.

Carrick explained that while results remain non-negotiable, expression and enjoyment are central to his vision. He said he wants to see positive football, players expressing themselves and supporters enjoying what they see, while acknowledging that results must ultimately accompany that approach.

Few players stand to benefit more than Kobbie Mainoo. The academy graduate found opportunities limited under Amorim, starting just once as the system prioritised physical security over progressive midfield play.

Carrick has previously spoken highly of Mainoo’s intelligence and composure. A midfield pairing alongside either Manuel Ugarte or Casemiro would allow the youngster to operate in his natural role, progressing play and dictating tempo.

After summer uncertainty and January interest from Napoli, Mainoo now has a clear chance to re-establish himself — with England ambitions firmly back in focus.

Another clear beneficiary is club captain Bruno Fernandes. Under Amorim, Fernandes was frequently used in a deeper pivot role, restricting his influence in advanced areas.

In the first match following Amorim’s exit against Burnley, Fernandes immediately looked freer, picking up possession between the lines and playing a decisive through-ball for Benjamin Šeško to score.

When Fernandes thrives, United often follow. Carrick’s system restores him as the primary creative outlet, responsible for chance creation and attacking rhythm.

The third player whose role could be reshaped is Matheus Cunha. Despite starting the majority of Premier League matches this season, his long-term role has remained fluid.

With Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo returning from AFCON and Šeško leading the line, competition is intense. However, Cunha’s ability to drift centrally and operate between lines offers Carrick valuable flexibility.

At Middlesbrough, Carrick frequently used inverted wide attackers to create central overloads — a role Cunha could replicate, allowing Patrick Dorgu to provide width from left-back.

With Champions League qualification still within reach, Carrick’s challenge is immediate. Performances must improve quickly, but the renewed emphasis on attacking football is designed to reconnect players, supporters and identity at Old Trafford.
