Matias Soule will ‘seriously consider’ Sunderland transfer

Sunderland have reportedly stepped forward for Matias Soule and received encouragement that the AS Roma attacker would seriously consider a move to England.

The Argentine’s future has been uncertain for several weeks, with Aston Villa previously linked with a transfer. No formal offer arrived at that stage, but Sunderland’s interest is now growing.

Soule has already rejected an opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia and is believed to be keen on playing in England.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Sunderland sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is driving the club’s interest in Soule.

Ghisolfi knows the 23-year-old from their time together at Roma and wants to add more creativity to Sunderland’s attack. Soule is viewed as an ideal option and has now emerged on the Black Cats’ transfer wish-list.

The biggest encouragement for Sunderland comes from the player’s position.

Soule reportedly wants to move to England and would “seriously consider” an offer from Sunderland. That gives the Black Cats a potential advantage after the attacker rejected interest from Saudi Arabia.

However, talks are still at an early stage.

Roma are not prepared to offer Sunderland a discount.

The Italian club paid around €30 million to sign Soule in 2024 and now want to make a capital gain of between €15m and €20m from a sale.

Taking the remaining value of the player into account, Roma would reportedly need a fee of around €35m to approve his departure.

That would make Soule a significant investment for Sunderland, although his age and potential could make the deal attractive.

Roma’s position is clear: they are open to a sale, but only at the right price.

Soule was regarded as one of Serie A’s leading young talents before joining Roma.

His successful loan spell at Frosinone earned him a move to the Italian capital, where he impressed during his first season despite injury problems.

The Argentine contributed to more than ten Serie A goals last season and offers several qualities Sunderland could use. He is strong in one-against-one situations, can carry the ball at defenders and is capable of playing in multiple attacking positions.

European football could also strengthen Sunderland’s case. Combined with Soule’s interest in moving to England, the Black Cats have reasons to believe a deal is possible.

The main question is whether they are prepared to meet Roma’s €35m valuation.

Sunderland must decide whether to turn their interest into a formal offer and enter negotiations with Roma.

The player’s willingness to consider the move is a major positive, but Roma’s €35m asking price remains the key obstacle. If Sunderland are prepared to invest heavily, Soule could become one of their most ambitious signings of the summer.
