Sunderland offer expected for Matías Galarza after World Cup role

Sunderland could make a formal offer for Matías Galarza in the coming days after River Plate decided the Paraguay international can leave the club this summer.

The 24-year-old midfielder is attracting interest from several European clubs following his World Cup campaign, where he recorded a goal and an assist. Sunderland are among the teams monitoring his situation, with River Plate now waiting for concrete approaches.

Galarza spent the first half of 2026 on loan at Atlanta United, making 13 appearances and playing 847 minutes before joining Paraguay for the World Cup.

His tournament included productive moments in attack, although he also attracted attention for his physical treatment of Kylian Mbappé during Paraguay’s meeting with France.

Sunderland, Olympiacos, Getafe, Monza and RC Strasbourg have all been credited with interest. According to reports in Argentina, River Plate expect offers for the midfielder in the coming days.

Galarza is due to return to River Plate, but manager Eduardo Coudet has reportedly left him out of his plans.
