Manchester United could soon receive a significant financial boost as they continue exploring a move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The Red Devils are already preparing for a busy summer rebuild under Michael Carrick, and fresh funds may become available through an unexpected source following developments involving former United forward Mason Greenwood.

With midfield reinforcements a priority, any additional income could prove valuable as United assess a potential move for one of the Championship's most sought-after players.

Greenwood transfer could benefit United

According to reports, Manchester United inserted a substantial sell-on clause when Greenwood joined Marseille on a permanent deal in 2024.

The agreement reportedly allows United to receive 40 per cent of any future profit generated from the forward’s sale.

That clause could now become highly relevant.

Reports from Turkey claim Fenerbahce are pushing to sign Greenwood, with presidential candidate Hakan Safi publicly declaring that an agreement has already been reached with the player.

Marseille are reportedly seeking around £47.5 million for the forward.

Should a deal be completed at that level, Manchester United could receive approximately £19 million through the sell-on arrangement.

Carrick planning midfield rebuild

The potential windfall arrives at an important moment for United.

Carrick is expected to oversee significant changes in midfield following the departure of Casemiro, whose reported £350,000-per-week wages will also be removed from the club's salary commitments at the end of June.

Meanwhile, United have already secured additional funds after Napoli activated the clause to make Rasmus Hojlund's move permanent.

Those developments have strengthened United's position in the transfer market.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson remains a priority target, with reports suggesting a £35 million agreement is already in place.

However, United are believed to want further additions in the middle of the pitch.

Why Fernandes appeals to Carrick

Fernandes is viewed as one of the most complete young midfielders currently available.

The Portugal Under-21 international combines technical quality with athleticism and has demonstrated an ability to operate in both defensive and advanced midfield roles.

Having followed his development closely throughout the season, his maturity and consistency stood out even as West Ham struggled collectively.

Those qualities align with the type of profile Carrick is believed to favour as he reshapes United's squad.

Key Points

  • Manchester United could receive around £19m from Mason Greenwood's potential transfer.
  • Fenerbahce claim to have agreed a four-year deal with the Marseille forward.
  • United are planning a major midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick.
  • Ederson remains a priority signing from Atalanta.
  • West Ham reportedly value Mateus Fernandes at £80m.

What’s next?

United will continue monitoring developments surrounding Greenwood while advancing plans for their own recruitment.

Fernandes remains a player of interest, but West Ham's valuation presents a significant challenge. Additional sales, combined with savings from departing players, could ultimately determine whether Carrick receives the resources needed to pursue one of his most ambitious midfield targets.

Would Mateus Fernandes be worth £80 million for Manchester United, or should the club focus on more affordable midfield options?
