Marc Guehi Liverpool transfer collapse has become one of the standout stories of the summer window. The England defender was on the brink of sealing a £35 million switch to Anfield on deadline day before Crystal Palace pulled the plug when they failed to secure a replacement.

The 25-year-old, who underwent a medical in London and appeared set to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League champions, has now opened up on the saga. Speaking before Palace’s Europa Conference League clash with Dynamo Kyiv, Guehi said: “I don’t have much to say, to be honest. I’m focused on playing football and playing for this club. But to the fans, thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it.”

Why Guehi’s Liverpool transfer fell apart

Liverpool had agreed terms on a £35m deal, including a 10 per cent sell-on clause, with Palace reducing their original £40m demand in the final hours of the window. Guehi completed his medical and awaited final confirmation.

But a dramatic twist occurred when Palace’s pursuit of Brighton defender Julio Igor fell through after West Ham hijacked the proposed loan. Without cover in place, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner refused to sanction Guehi’s exit. Instead, the club signed 19-year-old French youth international Jaydee Canvot, though he is regarded as one for the future rather than an immediate replacement.

Guehi’s response and Palace focus

Despite his disappointment, Guehi remains captain and a central figure for Palace. He stressed his commitment: “It’s something I don’t think of at all. My only focus is on the club, I’m not too worried about any personal accolades. As long as the team is where it needs to be I’m happy.”

The centre-back added: “When you’ve tasted success you’re definitely not satisfied and do want more. Everyone at the club strives for more. We’ve seen what we can do. If we keep our heads down, hopefully we can have many more opportunities.”

Eagles flying high amid speculation

Palace’s form has helped ease tensions around Guehi’s future. The FA Cup winners are unbeaten in 18 matches across all competitions, including a penalty shootout victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield and a 2-1 league win against the Reds last weekend.

However, Guehi’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he has shown no inclination to extend. Liverpool’s stance after deadline day was that they would not revisit the deal in January, but Giovanni Leoni’s recent injury could force a rethink.

Analyst verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William said: “Guehi is in an awkward position. His dream move to Liverpool was within touching distance, yet collapsed through no fault of his own. The positive for Palace is his professionalism — he remains captain, remains consistent, and that keeps their momentum alive. But his contract situation means this story isn’t over.”

He added: “For Liverpool, Guehi ticks the boxes as a ready-made Premier League defender with leadership experience. If their injury crisis worsens, don’t be surprised if they test Palace’s resolve again.”

He will be gone in January I dont think Palace well let him sit out of his contract - that would be bad financial business. So they'll get a try to sign a decent CB. Might be stupid if we (Chelsea) aren't in for him in January, we need a CB.
