Manchester United are set to stick with a back three when they travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday lunchtime, with Ruben Amorim weighing up personnel changes amid a growing injury list.

United head into the Premier League clash looking for greater consistency after reverting to a three-man defence in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, following a brief switch to a back four against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

Amorim explains formation choice ahead of Leeds

Amorim confirmed after the Wolves draw that his tactical tweaks were opponent-specific rather than a shift in philosophy.

“No, we knew that they will play with a five,” Amorim said. “They will use the width. And today was just to do that and then sometimes building up with him open or closed with Luke Shaw doing the opposite.

“So we try to arrange the right situations for the situation that we have in the moment.”

With Leeds boss Daniel Farke also favouring a back-three system, United are expected to mirror that approach at Elland Road rather than reverting to a 4-2-3-1.

Defensive reshuffle possible as absences mount

Amorim may still rotate personnel, particularly in defence. Leny Yoro is pushing to start ahead of Lisandro Martínez, with the Argentine having played twice in quick succession following a lengthy injury layoff.

United’s defensive options remain stretched. Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are both still sidelined, while Noussair Mazraoui is unavailable due to Africa Cup of Nations duty. Those absences leave Amorim short of alternatives as he balances workload and fitness.

Midfield and attack selection dilemmas

Bruno Fernandes will miss out again after Amorim confirmed he will not rush injured players back. That also leaves question marks over Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo, who remain doubts heading into the weekend.

Further forward, the continued absence of Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, both away at AFCON, opens the door once more for Joshua Zirkzee to start in attack. Despite being withdrawn at half-time against Wolves, Zirkzee could retain his place due to limited alternatives.

Predicted Manchester United XI vs Leeds

United are expected to line up in a 3-4-2-1 system. Senne Lammens is tipped to start in goal, with Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw forming the back three. Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu should operate as wing-backs, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte anchoring midfield. Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha are likely to support Benjamin Šeško in attack.

What’s next
