Three Troublesome Problems Have Emerged for Man City — Solving Them Will Save the Season

Manchester City injury updates and tactical reshuffles are dominating the conversation ahead of a season-defining week. Pep Guardiola’s side started brightly with a 4-0 win over Wolves, but back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Brighton have left them in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The next eight days could shape City’s campaign: a derby with Manchester United at the Etihad, a Champions League clash against Napoli, and then a trip to Arsenal. For a team with ambitions of winning at home and abroad, the issues are obvious — and urgent.

Here are the three big problems City must solve.

Manchester City’s £50m summer signing Gianluigi Donnarumma is waiting in the wings, and his debut is expected imminently. The Italian’s arrival changes everything — for James Trafford, who was being groomed as Ederson’s successor, and for City’s defensive style.

Donnarumma is a different type of goalkeeper: less expansive with the ball at his feet, but commanding in aerial duels and capable of big saves. Integrating him quickly is vital. A disjointed understanding between goalkeeper and defenders can prove costly in high-stakes games — particularly against United’s counter-attack and Napoli’s pressing structure.

Guardiola still doesn’t seem to know his best defensive quartet. Rayan Aït-Nouri is established at left-back, but the centre-back pairing remains unsettled. Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias offer physicality and aerial presence, while John Stones — when fit — remains arguably the club’s best all-round defender.

The right-back role is equally unclear. Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes have been trialled without conviction, while Abdukodir Khusanov’s pace makes him an intriguing option for a side that plays a high defensive line.

With Donnarumma about to step in, defensive stability is crucial. City conceded soft goals last season when chopping and changing their backline. This year, those lessons must be learned fast.

Erling Haaland is inevitable — three goals in three games so far — but he cannot do it all alone. City drew a blank against Spurs and managed just one goal despite multiple chances against Brighton.

Phil Foden has the quality to provide consistent end product, but beyond him the supporting cast remain inconsistent. Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Rayan Cherki and Oscar Bobb are all exciting talents, yet none have proven they can deliver double-digit goals across a season.

Liverpool’s frontline is firing already, making City’s lack of secondary scoring a potential title-defining weakness. Unless the wingers step up, Guardiola risks being overly dependent on Haaland.

FootballPlace analyst John William says this week could define Guardiola’s season:

“City have the talent, but the puzzle is unfinished. Donnarumma’s introduction must be smooth, the defence needs stability, and someone must ease the burden on Haaland. If Guardiola finds solutions quickly, City will bounce back. If not, Liverpool and Arsenal could race clear before October.”

The Etihad derby against Manchester United on Sunday is the perfect opportunity to reset the narrative. Victory there would restore belief before facing Napoli in the Champions League midweek.

But failure to fix defensive issues and spread goalscoring responsibility could see Guardiola’s side slip further behind rivals early on. Arsenal away next Sunday may already be a must-not-lose fixture.
