Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernández has reaffirmed his determination to return to River Plate later in his career, just two months after completing his reported €145million transfer from Chelsea.
The 25-year-old Argentina international joined City during the summer, reuniting with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite his long-term contract in Manchester, Fernández insists he wants to represent his boyhood club again and help River compete for trophies.
Enzo Fernández makes River Plate return promise
Speaking on Argentine programme Los Edul, Fernández discussed his emotional connection to River Plate and his ambition to return to the club where he began his professional career.
"I want to return to River at some point, I've said it several times. I'm going to return, I'm sure of it," he said.
The midfielder explained that he wants to experience more success with River and spend longer representing the club.
His comments were made ahead of Sunday's Superclásico against Boca Juniors, a fixture Fernández continues to follow closely despite playing in Europe.
However, he made clear that a return is not an immediate prospect.
"Today, I'm here with a long contract at Manchester City. There's still a long way to go, but it will happen."
The remarks, translated from Spanish, underline Fernández's long-term ambition rather than signalling plans to leave Manchester City in the near future.
Fernández establishing himself at Manchester City
Fernández joined Manchester City from Chelsea in September in a transfer reportedly worth €145million.
The move reunited him with Maresca, under whom he had previously played at Stamford Bridge.
The Argentina international has made 10 appearances for City across all competitions this season, playing 713 minutes.
He has contributed one goal and one assist during that period as he settles into the club's midfield.
Fernández remains under contract until June 2032, meaning any potential return to Argentina would depend on developments much further into his career.
For now, his focus remains on establishing himself at City and contributing to Maresca's side.
River Plate connection remains strong
Fernández developed through River Plate's academy before progressing into the senior team.
He spent time on loan at Defensa y Justicia, where he gained valuable first-team experience, before returning to River in 2021.
The midfielder helped the Buenos Aires club win the Argentine league title that year and established himself as one of their leading young players.
He recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in 53 official appearances for River before moving to Benfica in 2022.
His subsequent transfers to Chelsea and Manchester City took him to the highest level of European football, but his attachment to River remains strong.
During the Los Edul interview, Fernández explained that he wants to return to win more trophies and enjoy the experience of representing the club for longer.
Although no timetable has been set, the midfielder is confident that another spell at River will form part of his career.
